The Practice Question Paper
The Practice Question Paper
A practice question guides a practice change project by identifying a population, intervention, outcomes, and timeline. This discussion focuses on formulating a practice question based on the evidence-based intervention selected in the week one discussion. The selected study’s evidence-based intervention, outcomes, bio-physiological measures, and population will also be identified.
The selected study is ‘Effectiveness of Structural-Strategic Family Therapy in the Treatment of Adolescents with Mental Health Problems and Their Families’ by Jimenez et al. (2019). The practice question formulated from the study is as follows:
Do families of adolescents with severe mental illnesses receiving Structural Strategic Family Therapy (SSFT), compared to routine mental illness therapies, demonstrate improvement in family relations after ten months?
Based on the PICOT question format, the above practice question is feasible for use in a practice setting since it has identified the population that will benefit from an intervention, the outcomes that can measure its success, and the expected timeline. The evidence-based intervention is Structural Strategic Family Therapy. Research shows that family therapies effectively improve the state of families with children with mental illnesses (Carr, 2019). The specific patient population that would benefit from this intervention in a practice setting is adolescents with severe mental illnesses and their families. Lean et al. (2019) note that family functions of families of adolescents with mental illnesses are most affected.

Furthermore, the outcomes specific to the evidence-based intervention include the sense of parental competence, parental alliance, parenting practices, and individual adolescent behavior. The bio-physiological measures used in the study included a sociodemographic profile, child behavior checklist for ages, parental style competence, parenting styles and dimensions questionnaire, parental alliance inventory, and the family cohesion and adaptability scale. The adolescents with mental illnesses and their families completed these measures before and after the intervention. An evaluation was done before and after the intervention, after which a comparison was made to assess the intervention’s outcomes and success.
Based on the selected study, the practice question above can be used as a framework for the SSFT intervention in the adolescents with mental illnesses population. The success of the intervention can be measured using the above measures. Practitioners can adjust the intervention timelines to shorter timelines.

The Practice Question
Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to demonstrate your understanding of the practice question in a practice change project.
Instructions
Using your selected practice problem, the appraised quantitative research study used in Week 1, and the evidence-based intervention from the Week 1 research study, write a one-sentence practice question.
Use the format tool (PICOT), Johns Hopkins Individual Evidence Summary Tool, and the quantitative research study used in Week 1 to determine if your practice question is feasible in a practice setting.
Identify the evidence-based intervention from the study.
Identify the specific patient population who would benefit from this intervention in a practice setting.
Identify the outcomes specific to the evidence-based intervention.
Describe all biophysiological measures, any surveys or questionnaires, and the timing the outcomes were measured. As an example, were the outcomes measured every other week?

Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
Analyze research and non-research data for the purposes of critical appraisal and judgment of evidence for translation into practice. (POs 1, 3, 5, 7, 9)
Formulate an emerging practice question focusing on the evidence-based intervention to influence practice outcomes. (POs 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9)
