Synthesis is the process of bringing information from different sources together to identify knowledge gaps and inform an evidence base to inform practice. The selected option for this discussion is option two, using the synthesis of research study evidence and non-research evidence to introduce the implications of the mental illness practice problem in terms of significance, mortality, and economic ramifications. This discussion presents an illustration of the understanding of synthesis by using the previously appraised articles to introduce the implications of the practice problem.

The mental illness practice problem impacts individuals, families, and communities (Jimenez et al., 2019) significantly, causing issues such as suicide, especially among youths and adolescents (Lindow et al., 2020). Recently, the populations that are most affected by mental illnesses are healthcare workers (Fiol-Deroque et al.,2021) and youths and Adolescents (Lindow et al., 2020) mainly due to stigma and being reluctant to seek mental health help (Jimenez et al., 2019). Additionally, 970 million people around the world live with severe mental illnesses  (World Health Organization, n.d), who often die earlier than people without mental illnesses by approximately 15-20 years (Jimenez et al., 2019) due to disability, inappropriate incarceration, suicide, and poor quality of life (NAMI California, n.d.). Mental illnesses also have increased direct and indirect costs to individuals (Jimenez et al., 2019) and are associated with poor work productivity (WHO, n.d.) and loss of employment (NAMI California, n.d.).

From the research and non-research synthesis above, it is evident that mental illness implications are felt greatly across health populations. One of the populations greatly affected by mental illnesses is youths and adolescents. As the synthesis above shows, mental illnesses significantly impact individuals, families, and communities economically.
