The Evidence-Based Intervention Essay

Mental illness is a major practice problem worldwide. It impacts individuals, families, and healthcare systems considerably due to high treatment costs, unnecessary disability, and poor quality of life. There is, therefore, a need to identify evidence-based interventions that can be used to address the problem. According to Castillo et al. (2019), some evidence-based interventions for addressing mental illnesses in the community include community screenings, family and individual therapies, awareness creation, and anti-stigma programs. This discussion presents an appraisal of one quantitative study with an intervention addressing the mental illness national practice problem.

The article, ‘Effectiveness of Structural-Strategic Family Therapy in the Treatment of Adolescents with Mental Health Problems and Their Families’ by Jimenez et al. (2019), was selected and appraised using the John Hopkins research appraisal tool. It is a quasi-experimental study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the structural Strategic family therapy (SSFT) intervention among adolescents in the treatment of adolescents with mental illness and their families. The study found improvement in the dyadic, family, and individual facets of families with adolescents with mental illnesses. Research shows that family therapy is an effective intervention in treating and controlling various mental illnesses (Carr, 2019). Hence, the selected intervention is SSFT.

The intervention measured in the selected study is Structural Strategic Family Therapy. The outcomes specific to this intervention included improved adolescent behavior, perceived family functioning, parenting alliance, and enhanced parental sense of competence. The steps I would take in implementing the SSFT intervention in a practice setting include developing the intervention objectives, selecting an intervention team, introducing the intervention, and finally, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the intervention.

Addressing mental illness practice problem requires carefully selecting evidence-based interventions and implementing them in practice settings. SSFT is one of the interventions that can be implemented. The implementation process should be followed adequately to ensure successful implementation.
