Is Nursing Perceived As A Professional Partner With Other Disciplines?

Nursing is viewed as a partnership profession because it involves working with other professionals from other disciplines. Nurses collaborate with other professionals as equals to improve patient outcomes and the quality of care (Goldsberry, 2018). Through this collaboration, nurses can improve cooperation and communication between healthcare professionals and, therefore, improve patients’ safety and the quality of care. Nurses provide broad and deep knowledge and experience related to the needs of patients in the healthcare systems (Van der Gulden et al., 2020). They interact with physicians, other nurses, technologists, colleagues, researchers, administrators, regulators, accrediting professionals, and many others to ensure communities receive the best care (Moss et al., 2019). The nurses are also actively involved in developing, implementing, and improving healthcare systems and products within the healthcare industry.

Due to their proximity to patients and legislators, they can connect with influential leaders, end networks, clearly articulate ideas, listen to patient complaints, and empower others. Moss et al. (2019) indicate that in addition to clinical colleagues, the nurses work with nursing informatics, technologists, and vendors to develop electronic health records and introduce technology in the workplace for better record keeping and reduce errors associated with poor information storage (Van Dongen et al., 2018). For instance, by observing the nurse’s work, nurse informatics can identify unccessecary and complicated steps that are being made, prolonging the documentation of information and impacting patient care across multiple departments.

Through strong, collaborative interprofessional teams, all healthcare workers can embrace patient care protocols and patient-centered and team-based policies. The nurses are excellent coordinators and ensure that teams interact effectively with an intellectually diverse population of patients, families, technologies, physicians, and administrators (Van Dongen et al., 2018). They can coordinate the interaction of diverse people and ensure effective communication and understanding. When individuals from various backgrounds can communicate, the complexities within the healthcare delivery system are minimized (Goldsberry, 2018). These teams can achieve similar goals such as improved patient outcomes, lower care costs, and time-saving. Physicians and nurses must collaborate in various levels to offer additional opportunities for registered nurses to lead and influence processes to attain better outcomes and improvements in the healthcare industry.

A safe, empowering, and gratifying work environment is a healthy professional environment. It is a place of physiological, psychological, and interpersonal well-being that supports optimal health and safety, not just the absence of actual and imagined physical or emotional dangers to health (Moss et al., 2019). Compared to the general workforce, healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence. Overt and covert workplace aggression, bullying, and incivility significantly influence the individual’s experience and the broader work environment, resulting in increased time off work, higher unemployment rates among RNs and other team members, and worse (Van der Gulden et al., 2020). Nurses can help work with other professionals to advocate for a better work environment and ensure that the organizational culture supports a healthy workplace environment.

In conclusion, the relationships nurses develop in the workplace and with other professionals within the healthcare industry are critical in successfully and effectively redesigning healthcare, revising payer systems, and reducing barriers that prevent patients from receiving proper care at the right time. Nursing students should be adequately trained to initiate and maintain collaboration and partnerships within the healthcare industry.
