Community Resources: Futures Without Violence Essay
Community organizations are primary players in the health of a community. Various local, national, and global community resources work to improve the community’s health by advocating for better quality and accessibility of healthcare. They also contribute to public health in the community by promoting safety improvement, equal opportunity for all, and improving the overall quality of life in the community. Nurses assess these organizations to get more information about them and thus collaborate with them to improve public health in a community. This assessment aims to evaluate a community organization and how it contributes to public health, safety improvement, and the quality of life in the community. The organization of focus in this report is Futures Without Violence.
Futures Without Violence Organizations Mission, Vision, and its Contribution to Public Health and Safety Improvements
Futures without violence is a nonprofit organization that deals with health and social justice and aims to prevent and end violence against children and women worldwide (Futures Without Violence.org, n.d.). The organization’s policy development, programs, and public action campaigns are designed to address violence against children and women, ranging from domestic violence and child abuse to sexual assault and bullying. Futures without violence organization believes that addressing violence in the community means attacking the social norms that propagate and encourage violence. Therefore, the organization strives to get a new audience and transform the social norms by training professionals such as judges, nurses, and doctors to improve responses to abuse and violence in the community. Additionally, it works with policymakers and advocates to build sustainable community leadership and train the community on respecting healthy relationships and avoiding violence at all costs (Futures Without Violence.org, n.d.).
The organization’s mission and vision enable it to contribute to public health and safety improvements. Its vision is “A future without violence that provides education, safety, justice, and hope.” Its mission is “Providing groundbreaking programs, policies, and campaigns to empower individuals and organizations working to end violence against children and women around the world.” According to Rivara et al. (2019), violence is one of the vices that considerably impacts the health of a community. Victims of violence have been found to have increased incidences of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide. They are also at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and premature mortality (Rivara et al., 2019). Therefore, any violence impacts the individual negatively and, in turn, affects their quality of life. The organization’s mission and vision enable it to contribute to public health and safety improvements since it addresses one of the menaces in the community that negatively impact the health of the individuals and the community in general.
According to Healthy People 2030, violence leads to death, disabilities, and other injuries. Additionally, people who survive violence endure physical pain and suffering, experience mental distress, and have a reduced life quality. Exposure to violence also has detrimental health effects, including asthma, stroke, cancer, hypertension, and mental disorders (Healthy People 2030, n.d.). Among the Healthy People 2030 objectives on crimes and violence include reducing nonfatal physical injuries and adolescent sexual violence by anyone, which are included in the Futures Without Violence organization’s work. Therefore, Healthy People 2030 is an initiative that supports the organization’s vision and mission.
Futures Without Violence in Promoting Equal Opportunity and Improving the Quality of Life in a Community
Futures without violence is a federally recognized resource that provides information on domestic violence and bridges the gap between violence and sexual violence advocates (Futures without Violence.org, n.d.). The organization also creates innovative partnerships that make healthcare services accessible for violence victims, thus increasing care access when needed. Moreover, by recognizing the health impact of domestic and sexual violence, the organization works across all sectors related to health to advance healthcare for patients everywhere, therefore promoting equal opportunity for access to health and healthcare services.
Additionally, the organization promotes best practices and policy development to address the unique health needs of violence survivors and encourage violence prevention. More so, it initiates training and technical assistance to improve healthcare providers’ response to domestic and sexual violence. Research shows that access to care services, especially mental health services, improves violence survivors’ quality of life (Hisasue et al., 2020). Thus, through its work, the organization can improve the quality of life in a community.
Impact of Funding Sources, Policy, and Legislation on the Organization’s Provision of Services
The organization’s service provision in the community is significantly impacted by the sources of funding, policies surrounding service provision, and legislation in the community of service. Funding sources are one of the critical aspects of the organization that may potentially have implications on the organization’s service delivery. The organization heavily relies on funds from donations from private entities, corporations, governments, and individual donors. Other sources of funding for the organization include income from investments and partnerships (Futures Without Violence.org, n.d.). A major problem with having grants and donations as the major source of funding is that they are not always consistent and may limit the organization’s service delivery if they are unavailable or inadequate.
The available policies and legislation may enhance or limit the organization’s service delivery to the community members. One of the legislations that enhance the organization’s work is the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, which promotes the increase of resources for crime victims, including violence survivors (Sacco, 2019). The legislation promotes the organization’s work, thus providing more resources for community members. Additionally, the organization advocates for the development of policies to end violence against women and children (Futures Without Violence.org, n.d.).
Futures Without Violence Work’s Impact on the Health and Safety Needs of a Local Community
The organization’s work positively impacts a local community’s health and safety needs. As mentioned earlier, the organization deals with programs and campaigns aimed at preventing and ending violence against women and children. The health and safety needs of a local community are addressed by providing resources and information on violence, training care providers on violence response, and creating partnerships to make healthcare services available for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
Nurses can be involved in the organization in several ways. First and foremost, they can partner with the organization to initiate health promotion programs on violence and violence prevention. Secondly, nurses can volunteer in the organization to offer nursing care services to victims of domestic and sexual violence. The third way of involvement is by acting as a link to refer violence victims to other health services that they may need, including counseling and medical services.
Conclusion
Community resources such as Futures Without Violence significantly improve the quality of life and ensure health and safety needs of communities are addressed through their work. They provide equal opportunities for community members and advocate for their rights. Different policies and legislations may affect their work. There may also be barriers limiting their service to the community, including financial and socio-cultural barriers. As discussed above, nurses can play a vital role in community organizations by initiating health promotion programs and volunteering.
