Analysis of Trauma and the Associated Best Practices for Health Improvement

Trauma is the emotional response to a life-threatening event such as a natural disaster, accident, or sexual assault (Weisner, 2020). Trauma impacts the behavioral and physical health of an individual. Trauma is a community health concern that is rarely discussed. However, it impacts not only the individual’s mental health but also their health and quality of life due to its possible contribution to other health conditions. There are three types of trauma, namely, acute, chronic and complex trauma. Acute trauma is the emotional response resulting from exposure to a traumatic event. Chronic trauma is repeated exposure to a traumatic event, and complex trauma is exposure to multiple traumatic events.

Trauma has lasting adverse effects on the individual. Some of the effects include disruption of neurodevelopment, cognitive, social, and emotional impairment, adoption of unhealthy/risky health behaviors, disease, disabilities, and other health problems, and also early death. One of the significant causes of trauma is exposure to early life stress and adverse childhood experiences. Trauma in childhood is more likely to impact the child’s development, more so their adulthood, or contribute to adulthood trauma.

There are various trauma management best-practice interventions that are evidence-based and are used in health improvement. These interventions include psychoeducation, psychological first-aid, Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and immediate management of the physical effects of trauma. Psychoeducation is the provision of education focusing on basic knowledge of a specific illness, including the nature of the illness, its etiology, progression, prognosis, consequences, treatment, and alternatives (Sarkhel, Singh, & Arora, 2020). Psychological first aid is the attention given to individuals after exposure to a traumatic event. Psychological first aid includes enhancing safety, connectedness, and hope.

According to Al-Tamimi and Leavey (2022), trauma-focused therapies are interventions designed to manage trauma in individuals affected by exposure to traumatic events. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychological treatment that focuses on changing the behavior that exposure to trauma has influenced. Additionally, individuals exposed to trauma may have physical manifestations of the effects, which require immediate attention. Jonker, Graupner and Rossouw (2020) note that one of the evidence-based interventions for trauma management is immediate attention to manage the physical effects of trauma. One of the underlying assumptions in this analysis is that the community members are aware of trauma and its various impacts on different aspects of life. A significant area of uncertainty in this analysis is that many mental health issues and other health conditions surrounding trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder, have not been discussed. Specific Goals that should be Established to Address Trauma

Various goals exist in addressing trauma in the community. The first goal is the creation of safe public spaces in the community. The community disruptions and the other factors following community disruption mainly cause community trauma. Creating safe spaces in the community will encourage cohesion and openness and prevent the causes of trauma.

The second goal is creating awareness at the individual and community level on trauma and the impact of trauma on an individual’s mental, physical and behavioral aspects. Trauma is one of the mental health concerns in there is a lot of stigmatization surrounding it. Addressing trauma should begin with creating awareness at the individual and community levels, thus encouraging people to seek help when they experience trauma or its effects.

The third goal is to develop trauma-informed environments across all institutions and interactions. According to Champine et al. (2019), establishing a trauma-informed environment helps to counter community trauma symptoms, Support healing and connections that facilitate healing, and propagate norms that encourage healthy behaviors. Training and awareness creation in the community about trauma and the importance of maintaining a trauma-informed environment will help support healing and prevent preventable occurrences of traumatic events such as exposure to adverse childhood experiences.

The fourth goal in addressing trauma is encouraging the use of other non-pharmacologic strategies for coping with trauma. These strategies include journaling, reaching out for help, yoga, exercise, and meditation. These individual-focused approaches are known to address trauma through prevention, healing, and avoiding remissions. Healthcare professionals can apply this approach, especially where the stigmatization and other factors surrounding trauma and mental health are profound.

Available Community Resources

Various community resources are available to facilitate a safe and effective continuum of care in trauma. Community resources play a significant role in health promotion and creating a healing environment for individuals affected by trauma. They also help rehabilitate individuals whose effects of trauma have spread to impact their physical health and life quality. Additionally, community resources provide information on trauma and its impact on the individual and community. One of the community resources available is local trauma support groups. Duane et al. (2019) note that community support groups are influential if offering social support that helps the patient in the healing process. Additionally, these groups act as referrals to healthcare institutions when their members require medical attention.

Other community resources are non-profit, faith-based, and community-based organizations that provide the community with information on trauma, treatment options, management, and prevention. Some of these resources also support research on trauma, which helps identify evidence-based practices to enhance prevention, treatment, and management. The organizations provide information to the community members, thus reducing stigma, enhancing treatment-seeking behavior, and adherence to trauma treatment.

Conclusion

Trauma is a significant health concern requiring attention using best-practice interventions. Some of these interventions include psychoeducation, psychological first-aid, Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and immediate management of the physical effects of trauma. Care coordination focused on addressing trauma should have specific goals. Community resources play a significant role in trauma prevention, management, and treatment. Care providers should collaborate with these resources to address the health concern.

As coordinators of care, nurses must be aware of the code of ethics for nurses and health policy issues that affect the coordination of care within the context of the community. To help patients navigate the continuum of care, nurses must be proficient at interpreting and applying the code of ethics for nurses and health policy, specifically, the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Being knowledgeable about ethical and policy issues helps ensure that care coordinators are upholding ethical standards and navigating policy issues that affect patient care.

This assessment provides an opportunity for you to develop a presentation for a local community organization of your choice, which provides an overview of ethical standards and relevant policy issues that affect the coordination of care. Completing this assessment will strengthen your understanding of ethical issues and policies related to the coordination and continuum of care, and will empower you to be a stronger advocate and nursing professional.

It would be an excellent choice to complete the Vila Health: Ethical Decision Making activity prior to developing the presentation. The activity provides a helpful update on the ethical principles that will help with success in this assessment.

 

Your nurse manager at the community care center is well connected and frequently speaks to a variety of community organizations and groups. She has noticed the good work you are doing in your new care coordination role and respects your speaking and presentation skills. Consequently, she thought that an opportunity to speak publicly about contemporary issues in care coordination would be beneficial for your career and has suggested reaching out to a community organization or support group to gauge their interest in hearing from you, as a care center representative, on a topic of interest to both you and your prospective audience.
