Vulnerable Populations Worksheet Paper

Vulnerable populations in societies face various social problems that disadvantage them and increase their vulnerability to other social problems. Vulnerable groups in communities include children, homeless persons, pregnant women, and older adults. Several factors expose these individuals to physical, physiological, and social risks. Several deficits or areas of weakness make these individuals vulnerable. Vulnerable populations have various social problems such as poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, poor social support, poor access to healthcare resources, and social discrimination (McCartan et al., 2018). These social problems often culminate in other issues, making them live in cycles of unending social problems and vulnerability

Poverty, illiteracy, and social exclusion have far-reaching effects on euthanasia. The government protects these populations from social injustice through policies that favor ethical care at a macro level. Vulnerable populations such as the homeless and the elderly suffer financial limitations. These individuals may opt to take their lives and end suffering in situations when they cannot afford medications or good treatment for their conditions. Many decisions, such as euthanizing patients on life support machines, depend on families’ financial stability (Abakare, 2021). Some families opt to euthanize their loved ones to prevent them from incurring high healthcare costs that jeopardize their livelihood or cannot afford.

Illiteracy has various effects on euthanasia. The poor and illiterate have a high dependency on faith and may not take euthanasia as an option. Illiteracy also prevents vulnerable populations from knowing its existence or its applicability (Sullivan, 2018). Thus, these vulnerable populations may be involved in illegal euthanasia practices without their knowledge, among them, social discrimination, as well as ethical and professional inclination of some individuals. Many vulnerable individuals are well-protected by the government and healthcare institutions. However, healthcare providers may be carried in the social wave of social discrimination. Chronic and life-threatening illnesses are the most significant triggers of euthanasia, and vulnerable populations may be denied the right to live when faced with such conditions. A common explanation behind the act is that the individual is viewed as less productive, and the interventions would waste resources on productive populations (Abakare, 2021). Social discrimination causes disparities in the exercise of euthanasia where individuals use a value or merit-based system.

Empowerment of vulnerable groups is a formidable intervention in minimizing social discrimination. Historical interventions are government policies and regulations preventing social discrimination for various reasons such as poverty and illiteracy and taking stern measures against social injustice (Sullivan, 2018). However, these interventions have not been effective because these populations are unaware of these laws and policies. Thus, these interventions are only partially effective in managing the social problems of these vulnerable populations. Empowerment avails resources such as health insurance to the poor and education scholarships targeting children from low-income families. Empowerment interventions also teach individuals their rights and help them stand against discrimination or social injustices (Nayak, 2020).

Unlike other interventions, empowerment applies to all social problems, and some of the most effective interventions, such as gender mainstreaming, are based on empowerment principles. Individuals who understand the law that protects them are more likely to report social injustices and seek help than individuals who do not understand these laws and regulations (Abakare, 2021). In addition, resources such as health insurance, scholarships, and social institutions that protect vulnerable individuals are integral in reducing social injustices by minimizing vulnerabilities (Nayak, 2020). Empowerment of vulnerable individuals after keen problem analysis and review is thus the best solution to social problems.
