WEEK 1 DISCUSSION: GETTING STARTED WITH PEDIATRICS
WEEK 1 DISCUSSION: GETTING STARTED WITH PEDIATRICS
Discussion
I am a registered nurse with more than five years experience in practice. I am passionate about pediatric nursing. I enjoy working with pediatric patients and their families to meet their diverse health needs. The passion that I have towards this subgroup of patients informs my decision to pursue an advanced registered nurses’ specialization in pediatrics. I have several strengths that will help me to become successful in my roles as a pediatric nurse and a family nurse practitioner. First, I can deliver patient and family-centered care. I always collaborate with patients and their families in making informed treatment decisions(Green et al., 2019). I incorporate their values, beliefs, and preferences into the care plans developed to promote health and wellbeing.

I am also dedicated towards promoting evidence-based practice in pediatrics as a family nurse practitioner. I have led the implementation of quality improvement initiatives in my practice. I have the desired knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to translate evidence into practice for optimum outcomes. I also have effective communication skills. I listen attentively and express myself in a way that increases the understanding of those I work with. I also engage in regular self-assessment to identify areas of improvement that for my overall performance and competency development(Valizadeh et al., 2019; Yoo & Cho, 2020). My weaknesses include being too keen to details and emotionally attached to my pediatric patients.
One of my career goals is to develop effective leadership skills by the end of the program. I also intend to advance my clinical research and translation of evidence into practice skills. I also intend to advance my skills in working in collaboration with other healthcare providers to improve care outcomes. I see myself being a PhD nurse in the next ten years. This achievement will expand my competencies in a range of areas such as leadership, management, policy issues, and advocacy in nursing (Hardy et al., 2021). The course will help me to achieve the above goals and objectives. Course activities such as research, group activities, use of technologies, and projects will help me to achieve these objectives and goals.

Primary care of children from newborns to those on the cusp of adulthood requires considerable knowledge, as well as the finesse to manage parents and families of all types, and the changing needs, attitudes, and independence of young people as they grow and mature. Considering that this week—in fact, this entire first module—is focused on growth and development, it is fitting for you to reflect on your current and anticipated growth and development in advanced nursing, and specifically, in pediatric care. When you made your decision to pursue training as a Family Nurse Practitioner, how did pediatrics factor in your thinking? Is the opportunity to work with children and adolescents a strong motivator, or does it rank for you as more of a concern?
As you get started with this course, take time to reflect on your present capacity as you prepare to immerse yourself in the requirements of pediatric care as a nurse practitioner. How can you benefit most from this course, and how can it further you along the professional path you have chosen or in achieving your career goals?
This Discussion can be a catalyst for self-assessment and offer valuable insights from your colleagues. It is also an opportunity to get to know them and to introduce yourself, in anticipation of further interaction as you engage in the course i-Human Assignments.
