PICOTDraft

Part 1:
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the leading hospital acquired infections that affect hospitalized patients. The existing data shows that of all the urinary tract infections that patients get while hospitalized, 75% of them are associated with urinary catheters(CDC, 2019). CAUTIs have adverse health effects on the patients and their significant others. The affected patients incur high hospital costs due to prolonged hospitalization and the need for complex care from CAUTIs-associated complications. In severe cases, complications may result in premature mortalities (Zavodnick et al., 2020). Nurses and other healthcare providers play the crucial roles of of implementing evidence-based interventions that minimize the risk and prevent occurrence of CAUTIs in healthcare. Accordingly, they adopt interventions such care bundles, utilize aseptic techniques, and engage in continuous professional development initiatives to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency in the patient care processes. In addition, interventions such as the immediate removal of urinary catheters when no longer necessary, replacing foley catheters with external catheter devices, utilization of stat lock securement devices, daily CHG bathing, keeping tubing free of kinks and loops and the bag below the level of the bladder have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing the problem (Abdelmoaty et al., 2020; Kaur, 2021).

The practice site has witnessed a rise in the rates of CAUTIs over the past three months. Accordingly, the current rate of CAUTIs is 25% above the hospital’s benchmark data. Despite this rise, minimal interventions have been adopted to address the problem. The prevention and reduction of rates and risks of CAUTIs, depend largely on the nurses’ awareness level about the causes, risk factors, and best practices to prevent them in the patient care process. Training and educating nurses about best practices in the prevention of CAUTIs is a cost-effective and sustainable approach that health organizations should adopt(Kaur, 2021). Therefore, it is proposed in this project that nurses in the practice site to be trained on the use of best practices to ensure the prevention nd reduction of CAUTIs among hospitalized patients with indwelling urinary catheters. The best practices will enhance safety, quality, and efficiency outcomes for the patients at risk of CAUTIs(Lem et al., 2022).
Part II:In the table below, describe the population and the intervention. (You will continue drafting the PICOT, completing the shaded areas in Topic 3.)
PICOT Question
P Population Hospitalized patients with indwelling foley catheters
I Intervention Training nurses on best practices on catheter insertion and care
C Comparison Usual care
O Outcome Reduction inrates of CAUTIs and hospital stay among patients with indwelling urinary catheter
T Timeframe Six months
PICOT Among hospitalized patients with indwelling foley catheters, does training nurses on the best practices on catheter insertion and care reduce the rates of CAUTIs by 50% and length of hospital stay within six months?
Problem Statement Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are crucial public health concerns in the current world. Hospitalized patients with indwelling urinary catheters have an increased risk of developing CAUTIs. Up to 75% of the urinary tract infections that hospitalized patients develop are attributed to the use of folley catheters. The consequences of CAUTIs include increased healthcare costs, prolonged hospital stay, CAUTIs complications such as septicemia and even death(Abdelmoaty et al., 2020). The practice site has witnessed an increase in the rate of CAUTIs. However, no evidence-based interventions have been adopted to date to address the problem. Nurses play crucial roles in the implementation of evidence-based interventions to address actual and potential needs in their organizations to optimize outcomes. Therefore, training nurses about the best practices in catheter insertion and care is proposed to address the rising rates of CAUTIs in the organization.

Assessment Description

PICOT (Population/Problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time to achieve the outcome) is a method that helps clarify the qualities needed to create a good question out of a practice issue or problem affecting a population of focus.

The purpose of this assignment is to complete your PICOT for your selected nursing practice problem. Refer to your “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal: Identification of Nursing Practice Problem” assignment from Topic 1 to complete this assignment. If your nursing practice problem or PICOT required revision, include those revisions in this assignment. The final PICOT you develop in this assignment will provide the framework for developing your evidence-based practice project proposal. Use the “PICOT-Final” template to complete this assignment.

Refer to the “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal – Assignment Overview” document for an overview of the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments.

You are required to cite at least four peer-reviewed sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
