Nutrition is the central component in health promotion because of a number of reasons. Firstly, nutrition determines the immune status of individuals. People with low nutritional status are likely to have weak immunity, which increases their risk for diseases and other health problems. In such situations, health promotion interventions might not be effective. Nutrition also influences the effectiveness of the prescribed health promotion interventions for a population. An example is the effect of poor dietary habits on the use of health promotion interventions that target healthy living and lifestyles.
Significant nutritional challenges are witnessed among the emerging populations. One of them is difficulties in accessing healthy, nutritious food. The challenges arise from the high costs of healthy foods in their societies. The other challenge is the increasing population of people engaging in sedentary lifestyles. Sedentary lifestyles have led to a rise in the cases of obesity, overweight, and diabetes. The other challenge in the emerging populations is malnutrition. Severe shortage of the needed dietary sources results in nutritional deficiencies that can lead to malnutrition. Nutritional deficiency results in the development of deficiency related diseases such as kwashiorkor and severe malnutrition. It also weakens immunity, which increases the individual vulnerability to diseases. Nutritional excess on the other hand results in obesity and its associated complications such as diabetes, heart disease, and fractures (Grodner, Escott-Stump & Dorner, 2015). Therefore, both nutritional deficiency and excess have adverse consequences on health.
