Setting personal and professional goals in life is important as it guide one in the development of strategies to achieve them. One of my professional goals is to advance my level of studies to the PhD level in the next 5-10 years. I intend to achieve this goal as a way of advancing my knowledge and skills in nursing. I believe that achieving this goal will enable me have in-depth knowledge and skills on a wide range of areas in nursing such as leadership, research, policy, and health management. I intend to use the knowledge and skills I will obtain in this level to empower other nurses through coaching and mentorship (Joel, 2017). My other professional goal is being in the senior leadership position in a health organization in the next five years. Being in this position will enable me to utilize my knowledge and skills in nursing to influence nursing practice. I will utilize the position to strengthen the need for evidence-based practice in the organizations that I will lead (Hassmiller, 2020; Stanhope et al., 2019). Therefore, I believe that achieving these goals will enable me to explore my abilities as anticipated in shaping nursing and health care.

An organization that I wish to obtain their certification is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The AANP is a professional organization that was established with the main aim of empowering all nurse practitioners. It achieves this objective through education, continued professional development of the nurse practitioners, research, leadership, and advocacy. The organization operates with the guidance of values that include integrity, excellence, professionalism, leadership, and service. The AANP provides certification in different areas of specialization for the nurse practitioners. They include those specializing in emergency, adult-gerontology, and family nurse practitioners (AANP, n.d.a).
One of the certifications that AANP offers that is of interest to me is family nurse practitioner certification. The certification aims at testing the knowledge and skills of the professional nurse in areas that include family and individuals across their lifespan. This includes clinical knowledge on the health needs of individuals at families at stages such as prenatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and elderly stages (AANP, n.d.). The additional certification in this area will be important in a number of ways. Firstly, it will expand my knowledge on the ways in which health problems facing families and individuals can be addressed. It will also enhance my knowledge in nursing areas that require research to explore their influence on nursing. Lastly, the certification will expand my job prospects, hence, its significance.
I think I am not yet ready to obtain this certification. One of the requirements to be certified by the AANP is the need for having a master’s degree with a specialization in nursing, which I am yet to achieve (AANP, n.d.). However, I meet the other requirements stated by the organization. For instance, I am a certified registered nurse with a degree in nursing. I have also worked for the required period for one to be certified with the organization. Therefore, I intend to engage in activities that will increase my chances of being certified by the organization. The activities include reading extensively on areas related to the roles of family nurse practitioners, participating in the organization’s scholarly activities, and creating connections with other nurses who have been certified by the organization. Through these interventions, I believe I will be able to meet the certification requirements by the AANP.
