Two competencies emerging from these domains include having knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based practice (EBP) intervention using effective care coordination for patients and developing strategic leadership capabilities to lead healthcare teams comprising various professionals and experts to attain set healthcare goals at the organizational level. Leadership should demonstrate critical and reflective thinking and integrate emotional, social, and cognitive intelligence for better interactions with colleagues and patients and an understanding of the healthcare system to deliver patient-centered care (Egerod et al., 2021). For instance, emotional intelligence is critical for such leaders to support inter-professional teamwork and communication. Therefore, APNs should possess these competencies to attain expected outcomes within their organizations.
Integrating these competencies in future practice is essential as it improves an APRN’s ability to provide patient-centered care and work through teams, especially in inter-professional collaboration settings. For instance, effective communication can only happen when an advanced practice nurse (APN) incorporates emotional intelligence to understand their team members and the most effective approaches to implementing suggested EBP interventions (DeNisco, 2023). Therefore, advanced practice nurses should use emotional intelligence knowledge, and skills emanating from their practice and expertise to implement patient-centered care approaches to improve outcomes and satisfaction levels. The implication is that these competencies in their various domains demonstrate the importance of leadership styles for nurse leaders as each style helps in their development and acquisition.
