Assignment: Week 5 Reflection on Learning
Assignment: Week 5 Reflection on Learning
Reflection on Learning
During the week, my research on the literature concerning my PICOT question enhanced my knowledge of evidence-based fall prevention practice in elderly patients in long-term care facilities. First, I expected some difficulty in selecting articles because quantitative evidence is less common in nursing than qualitative evidence. Still, I was struck by the number of RCTs that provided powerful support for different interventions. Most of the available data is concerned with the effectiveness of fall prevention interventions, with essential components being environmental and staff interventions. However, I needed help searching for qualitative papers or practice recommendations on patient and staff education regarding fall prevention. Future studies in these areas must be continued to enhance the understanding of the educational features underpinning effective fall prevention interventions in long-term care organizations.

One such source was a scoping review done by Heng and his colleagues (2020), which looked at the effect of patient education on fall prevention in hospitals. This review confirmed the significance of schooling but explained the limitations of using these approaches in LTC facilities within the literature. Future research should focus on the sustainability of integrating educational initiatives with enacted protocols, like hourly rounding, in various healthcare organizations. In conclusion, the presented literature data indicate a high level of evidence for practice change and assert the necessity of utilizing a complex intervention for addressing the problem of falls. Patient and staff education and practical approaches toward interventions positively influence patients’ overall safety and performance. This week has been informative and deepened my understanding of the need to engage in research when developing nursing practice.

Preparing the Assignment
Reflection: Write 1-2 paragraphs reflecting on your learning for the week. Guiding questions are provided or you may write about what you felt was most significant to you for the week.
Think about the following question related to your review of the literature associated with your PICOT question. You will be revisiting some of these topics in your week 7 presentation.
- Was it difficult to find evidence related to your selected area of interest?
- What types of evidence were easiest to find (quantitative, qualitative, reviews, practice guidelines)?
- How did you find the overall quality of the available evidence?
- In looking at the available evidence, did you see any gaps in the evidence? What additional research on the topic would you like to see conducted?
- Based on what you found, does the literature support a practice change?
