Various elements contribute to the nursing shortage in the US. The first element is the enhancement of medical care leading to prolonged life. Although this is a laudable thing, it equally implies that the lifespan of people increases resulting in the need for more care as they age. Unfortunately, the nursing workforce is insufficient to address the needs of older people with prolonged life due to advancements in healthcare. The other element is the growth in the population of Baby Boomers. As this biggest generation in the US continues to age, it implies more healthcare needs by this population. Also, the Baby Boomer nurses are retiring and are not replaced proportionally by new nurses (Marć et al., 2019). The third element is high turnover rates by nurses due to numerous reasons including work burden, stress and burnout, reduced job satisfaction, and family issues. The last element is limited resources to educate new nurses (Spurlock Jr, 2020). This is attributed to the reduced number of facilities in nursing schools including scarcity of classrooms and nurse faculty leading to the enrolment of fewer nursing students.
One way to resolve the nursing shortage is through the implementation of preceptorship and residency programs. These programs are essential in improving critical thinking, and practical, technical, and communication skills needed in the modern healthcare system (McInnis et al., 2021). The primary objective of the preceptorship program is to assist the newly employed nurses to adjust to their responsibilities, developing critical thinking, and socializing them in their respective units. The residency program on its side seeks to develop clinical leadership, decision-making skills, and incorporate research into nursing practice and minimize nursing burnout. Taken together, preceptorship and residency programs can address the nursing shortage by enhancing nursing competency and ensuring the proper retention of nursing practitioners.
