DQ 2

Ethical dilemmas are common in patient care settings. Hence, practitioners should use appropriate strategies to help patients deal with such dilemmas. When offering spiritual care and intervention to patients facing ethical dilemmas, it is important to support them. It is important to support such patients while considering their worldview. One of the strategies to use is to appropriately and actively listen to them. Such an approach can be key to gaining insights into the patient’s feelings, thoughts, and concerns; in addition, it helps in understanding the specific issues from the patient’s perspective, hence offering appropriate help to them (Nissen et al.,2021). It is also important to respect patient autonomy in such instances. Ethical dilemmas usually present complex situations that need to be overcome; therefore, in helping them, there is a need to respect their autonomy and allow them to freely make decisions that align with their beliefs and values.

In a case where the patient’s worldview is founded on a particular faith, then I would strive to give spiritual guidance while following the directions of their beliefs. In addition, if I am not in a position to offer spiritual guidance, I would look for a spiritual leader who can help the patient with spiritual guidance (Green et al.,2020). It is also important to offer emotional support for the patient facing an ethical dilemma. This aspect entails reassurance and empathy as the patient negotiates the tricky aspects of the decision-making process concerning the ethical dilemma. If I were the patient, there are aspects of care that I would want to be provided with. For example, I would want the provider to respect my personal values and autonomy (Zhang et al.,2021). In addition, I would want care that offers me support by offering comprehensive and unbiased information to help me navigate through ethical dilemmas.
