APRNs utilize their knowledge and skills in advocacy to implement policies and interventions that minimize and prevent health problems among the public. Advocacy is also important in APRNs roles because it improves the quality of care offered to individuals, families, and communities. Advocacy aims at improving the existing systems and processes in healthcare (Turale & Kunaviktikul, 2019). As a result, APRNs use advocacy as a tool to advance the systems and processes utilized to ensure the promotion of quality, safety, and efficiency in healthcare.
APRNs also utilize advocacy as a tool to empower their patients, families, and communities. Nurses use it to ensure that patients, families, and communities stand up for their rights and advocate the adoption of policies and interventions that align with their prioritized needs. Patient empowerment is crucial in improving outcomes such as treatment utilization, which eliminates disparities in healthcare. Considerable disparities in access to healthcare exist in the United States. APRNs can use their advocacy skills to address such barriers to access to healthcare among the vulnerable. For example, APRNs can advocate the adoption of healthcare policies that expand the health insurance coverage for different conditions with high prevalence among the vulnerable populations(Abbasinia et al., 2020). Pillars of the Transformational Leadership and Effect on Policy Change
The four pillars of transformational leadership can effect policy change. One of the pillars is idealized influence. Idealized influence focuses on the ability of nurse leaders and managers to be role models of those they lead. Leaders with idealized influence can influence policy change by using the trust and respect that others have towards them. They can use the influence to make decisions that align with the public needs. The second pillar is inspirational motivation. Inspirational motivation entails leaders and managers who can motivate others to be committed towards the established vision(Moon et al., 2019). Individuals with inspirational motivation can influence policy change by leveraging on team spirit to achieve the collective vision of a proposed policy.
The third pillar is intellectual stimulation. Intellectual stimulation entails the individual ability to encourage creativity and innovation by challenging the existing beliefs, values, and practices of a group. An individual with intellectual stimulation abilities can influence policy change by encouraging problem solving and critical thinking about the need for a policy. Individual consideration is the last pillar, which entails individuals being able to act as advisors and coaches of those they lead(Khan et al., 2020). Encouraging individuals to support policies that enable them to reach their goals is an example of a way in which leaders can use individual consideration to promote policy change.
