Biological Basis and Ethical/Legal Considerations of Psychotherapy
Mental health problems are a source of huge disease burden to most populations globally. Psychiatrists largely use psychological and pharmacological interventions to treat psychopathologies. Psychotherapy is a common non-pharmacological intervention used for mental health problems. Therefore, this essay examines the biological basis of psychotherapy, the influence of factors on one’s perspective of the value of psychotherapy treatment, and legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy and its impact on therapeutic approaches.
Biological Basis of Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy treatments have a biological basis. Psychotherapy treats mental health problems as per the development, maturation, and functioning of the brain. Psychotherapy targets brain maladaptation that contributes to mental health problems and repairs them to facilitate recovery. Environmental exposures such as traumatic events produce negative experiences in the brain, causing psychopathologies. Psychotherapy re-maps these experiences to promote healthy functioning of the brain and, hence, recovery from mental health problems (Lepow et al., 2021). According to Javanbakht and Alberini (2019), psychotherapy does not just target a few neurotransmitters or modulators but influences the regulations that explain complex responses by the brain. It creates new experiences and learning that have positive effects on internal regulation, and emotional, and cognitive processes of the brain, hence, recovery from psychopathologies.
Impact of Culture, Religion, and Socioeconomics on One’s Perspective of Value of Psychotherapy Treatments
Culture can affect one’s perspective of the value of psychotherapy treatments. Individuals and society’s cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes toward mental health and mental healthcare affect their value of psychotherapy treatments. For example, a culture characterized by negative attitudes toward mental health increases the risk of patients experiencing stigmatization and isolation. Such culture also creates negative attitudes among the population towards the utilization of treatments such as psychotherapy for mental health problems. Religious beliefs also influence one’s value of psychotherapy treatments (Kirby et al., 2019). Religious beliefs, values, and practices may make patients diagnosed with mental health problems seek religious interventions rather than psychotherapy. Socioeconomic factors also influence one’s value towards psychotherapy. Accordingly, low socioeconomic status affects the utilization of psychotherapy treatments (McMaughan et al., 2020). As a result, individuals from low socioeconomic status place less value on the importance of psychotherapy in treating mental health problems.
Legal and Ethical Considerations for Group and Family Therapy
Legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy and individual therapy differ. Individual therapy is more private as compared to group and family therapy. In individual therapy, the patient works with a therapist to explore their health problems. The patient can express his concerns without fearing the privacy of their information, unlike in group and family therapy. Individual experiences with therapy also differ among the treatments. For instance, participants may criticize each other’s experiences in group and family therapies, which creates a feeling of lack of respect or value among the participants. This is not the case in individual therapy. The level of confidentiality of data also differs in the treatments. Therefore, the therapist must obtain informed consent, and explain the expected behaviors, goals, and outcomes to the clients before the start of the therapy (Stoll et al., 2020). Such interventions will eliminate any legal and ethical issues that may arise during the treatment.
Impact on Therapeutic Approaches
The above differences between individual, group, and family therapy may affect the adopted therapeutic approaches. The therapist must educate those involved in the therapies about the importance of ensuring privacy and confidentiality of each other’s mental health problems. The therapist must also adopt effective therapeutic skills such as communication to make each of the participants feel valued and respected (Stoll et al., 2020). The therapist must also be ready to address the ethical dilemmas that may arise from each of the members sharing their information about their problems and experiences.
Conclusion
In summary, psychotherapy has a biological basis. Culture, religion, and socioeconomic factors may influence one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments. Legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy differ from those of individual therapy. The differences affect therapeutic approaches for clients in these therapies. The essay utilized scholarly sources that experts in mental health authored.
