Inter-professional Organizational and Systems Leadership
Competing needs affect policy development and the effective delivery of healthcare services to patients in different settings. These needs may entail workforce welfare, resources, and patient care. For instance, the workforce needs may include compensation, training, sufficient staffing levels to tackle workload and reduce burnout, and training to up-skill nurses to deliver quality care based on emerging trends and evidence-based practice. Resources like funds to compensate the workforce and offer supplies to the facility may be limited. The facility must expand and provide quality, affordable, and accessible care to meet their healthcare needs (McPhillips, 2022). These needs affect policy development as policymakers must balance or align resources with patient needs. For example, organizations have to develop policies that align with mandatory requirements aimed at increasing access to mental health services despite the limited resources and high demand for these interventions from patients and health populations.
Mental health is a serious public health concern and national healthcare stressor because of its adverse effects on individuals, families, and the healthcare system (APA, 2023). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024), more than one in every five adults in the United States suffers from some form of mental health problem. The competing needs under mental health as a stressor include access to quality care against an insufficient workforce that makes seeking health intervention for the issue costly for a majority of adults in the country. Again, Mental Health America (MHA) (n.d) observes that a vast majority of individuals with mental health and substance use disorders do not receive treatment. These figures demonstrate that competing needs like the availability of providers and patient needs all require sufficient resources to enhance access to mental health interventions for millions of individuals suffering from mental health disorders.
These competing have significant impacts on the organization that include increased working hours for providers, long waiting lists for patients, and the need for resources; from equipment and tools to sufficient staffing levels. The implication is that the organization requires more resources which may hurt the cost of care and revenue collected. Formulating innovative policies like increased deployment of technology through telehealth and training more providers while addressing their welfare can address competing needs (Hill et al., 2022). Further, expanding health insurance benefits on most health insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, can help reduce the effects of these competing needs (Prasad et al., 2021). For example, having a training policy for mental health providers will equip them with sufficient skills to offer care to diverse patients based on their conditions.
