Human beings have several stages of life which include infancy, childhood, adolescent, adulthood and old age. Each of these stages of life have weaknesses and strengths that influences their communication with healthcare providers. The older population usually has cognitive impairments which not only affect their physical health but also the way they interact with others(Kim & Oh, 2020). This paper will analyze how age affects interactions in clinical settings and the role family plays in patient care.
Did your stage of life have an effect on interaction with healthcare professionals?
The patient I interviewed, Mr. M.S. a 65-year-old male was of the opinion that his age has greatly affected his interaction with healthcare providers. He accredited this to his cultural believes which do not allow him to give out certain information to younger people. He also does not fully trust the young healthcare providers since he thinks older health care providers are more efficient and credible compared to the younger ones. His sentiments support a study by Gaffney & Hamiduzzaman,( 2022) that revealed that older patients perception of healthcare providers credibility and trustworthiness influenced their willingness to participate in clinical communication.
He was also of the thought that an older healthcare provider could easily relate to his problems thus he preferred them over the younger ones. He thinks his deteriorating hearing loss has also negatively affected his interactions with healthcare professionals. He however states that his communication skills with healthcare providers have since improved immensely as he is a frequent visitor to the hospital owing to his old age, reduced immune system and some of his underlying comorbidities.
Areas of the hospital that were more concerned with your well-being or feelings.
The patient felt like the pharmacy department was very concerned about his well-being and the employers there treated him with kindness and empathy. They took their time to briefly explain how the medications that were prescribed to him would work, some of the side effects to expect and offered to call to check up on how he would be fairing. The pharmacist was keen to hear him out without interrupting him and gave answers to all of his queries. He also explained a situation where he was getting a CT scan of the abdomen done and the people in the radiology department were so kind to him and tried to relieve the anxiety he was feeling. They reassured him that the procedure was harmless and reminded him of its benefits. The technician taking the images would check on him often to calm him. They also availed the images and the report to the primary doctor on time something he was greatly impressed with.
Was your Family with You?
He reported that his immediate family members were present throughout his whole stay in the hospital. They visited him every now and then something he is grateful for since at times it could get so lonely. He also reports that the encouraging messages of kindness he received from the family members did speed up his recovery journey. The family participated in decision making, took care of him during his stay and kept him company.

Family involvement in patient care is important in offering patient centered services thus improving patient outcomes(Alcindor & Cadet, 2021). Family can be involved in patients care either in the outpatient set up or even in the in-patient set up. Mr. M.S reported that his family members were involved in his care before and after the procedure. After he underwent explorative laparotomy, his family was there to offer him physical support e.g. taking him to the bathroom, cleaning him and making sure he was comfortable in bed. They assisted him in feeding and made sure he took his medications.
They were educated on some of the side effects that he would experience from the medication offered and cautioned on some of the complications that he could develop post-operative. His son was given few tips on wound care and signs to look out for in case the wound is infected such as a discharging wound, foul smelling wound, extreme pain at the site of incision and fever. He was also instructed to make sure that Mr. M.S. ambulates preventing complications such as deep venous thrombosis. Nutritional instructions were given to his son where he was instructed to keep him on a light diet and make sure that he is passing stools and flatus. The son was also instructed to bring him back to the outpatient surgical clinic for review in two weeks’ time.
Conclusion.
Patients at each stage of life encounter factors that affect their interaction with healthcare providers. In the aging population, some of the factors can either be cognitive, cultural or even their personal perspectives. Family participation in the care of patients has also been proved to be beneficial in offering the patient physical comfort and emotional support.
