Innovations in healthcare are significant, but they tend to be forgotten once the program achieves its objectives. The organization goes back to the old ways of doing things. Therefore, sustainability has become a problem in the implementation process of healthcare research. Sustainability of change is important to retain the evidence-based practice, make it the new norm, and engage in continuous improvement of benefits. In addition to the positive impacts of the change, some barriers hinder the project’s implementation and realization of positive impacts long after project implementation.
One of the barriers to the evidence-based project sustainability is the lack of continued training of the healthcare staff on the new intervention. Training is essential and should be continuous for the practice to be permanently sustained. The new employees require training on evidence-based practice to sustain the intervention and make it the organizational culture. Broset score is not frequently used in psychiatry hospitals to prevent violence; hence, thorough and continuous training is necessary since new employees are deployed often, and some may not have heard about it. The solution is to instill continuous training on the project and make it mandatory for every new employee (Cowie et al., 2020).
The second barrier is insufficient resources to support the sustainability of the evidence base project. Some resources include human resources, finances, time, and materials. Staff shortage or increased workload pressures can hinder the sustainability of the project since the staffs are too busy to remember to apply the change. For example, a lack of funds to purchase the Broset Score checklist and maintain a constant supply might hinder the program’s continued use. The solution is to ensure enough resources are available during the planning and seek help from different stakeholders (Cowie et al., 2020).
Change should be effectively implemented according to the plan to achieve the set objective. It should then be evaluated continuously to ensure sustainability even after implementation. Barriers to change sustainability exist and should be mitigated for the intervention o still have impacts long after implementation. Some of the barriers include lack of resources and lack of staff training.
