Borderline Personality Disorder Essay

Idealization and devaluation are defensive processes that help Claire cope with worry and other internal or external pressures that she has. It’s employed when someone describes oneself, an object, or other people, like in this case, the people caring for her as being entirely defective, useless, or having exaggerated bad attributes. This is normal for people with borderline personality disorder to idealize and suddenly and unexpectedly turn into severe animosity toward that individual, a process known as devaluation (Lee et al., 2020). Given that the patient is a known BPD patient, there is typically no intermediate position for an individual with BPD, and idealization can swiftly develop into devaluation. When they are challenged, intimidated, or disillusioned, they swiftly devalue the individuals they once idolized. Rather than dealing with the pressure of contradiction, the devaluing characteristics reduce tension produced by ambiguity. According to Lee et al. (2020), BPD is marked by impulsive behavior, aggression, the employment of primitive defensive strategies such as splitting, projective identification, and denial, as well as participating in self-harm and suicide attempts. Claire slashes her wrists with a razor and overdoses on drugs, which is a primitive defense mechanism demonstrated via self-harm and suicide attempts.

May et al. (2018) define dialectical as the interplay of opposing ideas. The combination of both acceptance and transformation as fundamental for progress is referred to as dialectical (May et al., 2018). Dialectical behavior therapy seeks to alleviate BPD symptoms by substituting better coping skills such as mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion control, and distress tolerance for maladaptive behaviors. The mindfulness techniques are categorized into those that educate patients to watch, evaluate, and partake in the present time, as well as those that target patients’ propensity to engage without consciousness via spontaneous and emotion-driven activities (May et al., 2018). Both these skills educate clients to be existent in the present time with a non – judgmental mindset, concentrating on one thing and in an intelligent way, as well as to idealize and devalue both self and others.
