Capstone Project Change Proposal Presentation Summary
My capstone change project proposal presentation highlighted various aspects regarding the prevalence of falls among older adults (≥65 years) grappling with Alzheimer’s disease. Also, it aimed at enlightening the audience about the potential ramifications of falls, the plausibility of using fall risk precautions programs to guarantee patient safety, insights from evidence-based literature, resources necessary for implementing the fall precautions programs, and a plan for evaluating the project. It is essential to note the presentation was consistent with the overarching objective of addressing a safety issue that affects older adults with Alzheimer’s disease. According to Dykes et al. (2020), older adults are susceptible to falls due to the interplay between intrinsic factors like aging, frailty, musculoskeletal disorders, and eyesight problems, alongside extrinsic aspects like trip hazards, poor risk assessment activities and insufficient environmental modification approaches.
The presentation highlighted various roles of interprofessional teams in preventing falls among older adults in home-based care settings. For instance, it recommended patient progress monitoring and collaboration, effective communication between care providers, fall risk assessments, and the implementation of assistive technologies in preventing falls. Undoubtedly, these preventive approaches necessitate the tenets of Interdisciplinary Collaboration and team performance. Before presenting this presentation to the target audience, my preceptor highlighted the need to improve the PowerPoint’s visibility by increasing the font.
While effectively integrating my preceptor’s feedback, I was keen on polishing the slides to enhance their readability. After the presentation, the audience provided feedback and posed questions regarding the project’s feasibility and the plausibility of using fall risk precautions programs in preventing falls in older adults with Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately, I had conducted a thorough analysis of scholarly literature that enabled me to effectively answer the questions. Undoubtedly, this experience provided ideal opportunities for me to enhance my communication and public speaking skills, alongside bolstering my ability to explain findings from scholarly literature. Further, the feedback from the audience boosted my confidence and cultivated a positive dimension of my communication abilities. Consequently, I hope to use this experience as a benchmark for future nursing practice and professional role development.
