Compare and Contrast Articles Essay
A compare and contrast exercise is an essential tool for understanding two subjects in relation to each other. It also helps illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities between two subjects. Comparing two related subjects helps establish clarity between two somewhat confusing concepts (Chen and Zhou, 2022). This discussion post compares two articles: Importance of Social Determinants of Health and Cultural Awareness in the Delivery of Reproductive Healthcare (ACOG, 2018) and Health Determinants, Measurements, and Status of Global Health (Skolnik, 2021). The comparison and contrast will focus on the two articles’ purposes and intended audience.
Both articles are authored by targeting the same audience. The audience targeted consists of the general public, healthcare practitioners, and scholars in the medical field. The primary purpose of the two articles is also similar. The authors of the articles wrote them to contribute to the body of knowledge on the concept of social determinants of health. The significant contribution is how health and social determinants impact healthcare service delivery in various populations. The purpose of both articles is to address underserved populations. Also, both articles establish the role of social determinants of health in the health outcomes of the focus populations.
However, the two articles’ purposes and audiences differ in several ways. The specific immediate audience in Importance of “Social Determinants of Health and Cultural Awareness in the Delivery of Reproductive Healthcare” is the practicing obstetricians and gynecologists since they are addressed throughout the article. “Health Determinants, Measurements, and Status of Global Health,” on the other hand, is written for a general audience since the author addresses the audience as “we” throughout the article. The general purpose of the first article is to emphasize the impact of social and structural determinants of health on the reproductive health outcomes of women in underserved populations, while the general purpose of the second article is to create awareness of the social determinants of health, and their impact on general populations globally.
