Adolescents and Motor Vehicle Accidents

Adolescents for one of the vulnerable population groups. During this developmental stage in life, the descents exhibit advancements in psychological, physiological, as well as physical growth and development. Adolescents experience hormonal changes and sexual characteristics that impact their behavior and executive functioning. Physical injuries resulting from contact sports, accidents, among other preventable causes of mortality and morbidity are also common in this vulnerable population. Behavioral disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders from childhood are also present in this population.

Health problem and Contributable Issues

Driving motor vehicles is a learned behavior and sometimes can be acquired by adolescents and young adults. Motor vehicle crashes have been recently reported in my community. There have been preventable mortalities from motor vehicle crashes among adolescents and young adults. According to Banz et al. (2019) mortalities among the young population is disunity varies between age groups. Teenagers aged between 16 and 18, those aged between 18 and 20, and young adults aged between 20 and 24 have different risks of mortalities from motor vehicle crashes. Mortalities from motor vehicle crashes involve adolescents as passengers or drivers. The more relevant cause of mortality is when the adolescent is the driver.

Driving skills are attributable to the cognitive, motor, and behavioral capabilities of the adolescent. Seacrist et al. (2018) studied crash events and near-crashes between teens and adults. In their comparative study, the increase in the age of the driver and the driver’s experience was significantly associated with a decrease in rates of near-crashes and crash events. Teenagers are more likely to be involved in crash events and critical events than adults (Shults et al., 2019). The adolescents as the drover require intact cognitive functioning to enable them to remember the traffic rules and translate driving skills efficiently into action (Walshe et al., 2019). Therefore, the prefrontal cortex, corpus striatum, and cerebellum are required to coordinate motor functioning. Disturbances in these regions are seen in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and can impact their driving. Children adolescents with ADHD lack behavioral disinhibition and may indulge in high-risk driving behaviors leading to motor vehicle crashes. The culture of culture and genetics in the occurrence of motor vehicle crashes among adolescents has been studied. Adolescent cultural beliefs and persuasions determine their indulgence in high-risk driving behaviors leading to motor vehicle crashes. Their belief that physical health is paramount during driving and that the outcomes of the driving are determined by their behaviors is important in promoting safe driving behavior among the adolescents licensed to operate motor vehicles. Genetic predisposition is yet to be established between the high risk of motor vehicle crashes among youths.

Impact of Culture and Approach To Population Education and Interventions

The culture of the individuals will be important when intimating behavior change interventions for safe driving to reduce mortality and morbidity associated with moto vehicle crashes. Their uptake will be determined by their socio-cultural perceptions of the importance of safe driving. As part of routine care, patient education must aim to promote safety among adolescents and young adults.

Conclusion

Motor vehicle crashes among adolescents are more common than among adults. The resultant mortality and morbidity warrants population-level interventions. Associable risk factors and health determinants are mainly to adolescent psychosocial and physical health. However, their cultural persuasions determine their uptake of behavior change to avert the health problem. Other socioeconomic determinants of health per the healthy people 2030 were not established in relation to the motor vehicle accidents among adolescents.

Cultural Considerations and Genetic Predispositions

– Review Stanhope and Lancaster Foundations for Population Health in Community/Public Health Nursing Chapter 5-Cultural Influences in Nursing in Community Health and Appendix B.5 Page 593 Cultural Assessment Guide (picture provided).

– Provide a description of your population and the influences/ issues that may have led to and contributed to the health problem. Is it a genetic predisposition, environmental issue, related to health disparities, determinants of health, inadequate access to the healthcare system, inadequate nutrition, lack of resources? Does your population have a genetic predisposition to the health problem you have identified? State what these are and how genetics and culture may have a profound effect on the health outcomes for the population.

– Consider the cultural considerations that might inform your approach to caring for this population. How will this influence the education, interventions, and care planning for the population?

– Include cultural beliefs and genetic predispositions from a reliable source and data from CDC that validates the differences in health outcomes.
