Evidence-Based Practice
Two Barriers That Might Hold Nursing Practice from Achieving Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice refers to the processes involved when gathering, analyzing, and applying the research outcomes to ensure the enhancement o workplace, clinical practice, and patient outcomes (Dagne & Beshah, 2021). Using evidence-based practice help in the provision of quality care to patients at a lower cost. However, some obstacles tend to impede the implementation of evidence-based practice. The key is institutional factors such as the lack of accessibility of libraries and the shortage of staff to help adopt evidence-based practice (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019). Implementation of EBP requires organizations such as health systems to enhance accessibility factors and practicability deemed critical for implementing EBP. When organizations have access to libraries and enough staff to help practice EBP, such organizations have time and are capable of accessing evidence. However, it might be difficult for such organizations to implement EBP when there are challenges of accessibility and proactivity that require more staff and technology, such as online libraries, to conduct research.
Inadequate knowledge by the healthcare professionals such as nurses impedes the nursing practice in the United States from achieving evidence-based practice. Lack of knowledge regarding the use of evidence-based practice and having limitations on proficiencies is another barrier that needs consideration regarding the implementation of EBP by nursing practice. Enough proficiency and adequate knowledge of the applicability of EBP are essential since it helps nurses to be in a position to comprehend how to apply EBP. However, in a scenario where nurses need more proficiency and knowledge, recognizing the right criteria that reflect the best quality research becomes difficult (Neuppmann et al., 2020). Nurses in the United States tend to have inadequate knowledge concerning EBP because they need more time to research the practice due to workloads.
Ways to Address the Barriers
Overcoming these barriers requires nurses to work with the right stakeholders to develop trust by sharing opinions and experiences regarding the project. Such will enhance the betterment of the plan and implementation of the project jointly (McArthur et al., 2021). Organizations need to create enough libraries and employ more nurses. So that the issue of workloads and having adequate time to do research is achieved because developing libraries, especially online libraries, and having more nurses will ensure easy accessibility and practicability, thus, enhancing research to acquire more knowledge and proficiency regarding EBP.
