Topic 2 DQ 1
Descriptive epidemiological studies serve to delineate the distribution of health phenomena like diseases and their determinants which are the risk factors (Longjian Liu, 2018). They aim to study disease occurrence concerning the people affected, the geographical area of disease occurrence, and the time in which the disease occurs. Descriptive epidemiology organizes data for analysis to accurately detail and relates the variations in disease occurrence in different areas. Descriptive epidemiology is a source of invaluable information for disease prevention, and informed interventions, and forms a strong foundation for further research on a given issue. Descriptive studies have been used as a bedrock upon which complex studies are framed. Descriptive epidemiological methods are often employed to assess trends of diseases and associated risk factors, to build plans of action and assess the success of a health intervention service, and to point out areas where complex analytic studies need to be employed (Merrill, 2021). The types of descriptive epidemiological studies include case studies, case series, and cross-sectional studies.
An instance when I would use descriptive epidemiology to improve care is through studying the occurrence of diarrheal illness in infants less than five months old. The first step would be to collect demographic data of both the infant and the mother. These include the age of the infant and the mother, the race, the mother’s level of education, socio-economic status, residential location, and the marital status of the mother. The subsequent data that I would collect would be the frequency of diarrhea in each infant and whether they were being exclusively breastfed or not. Working as a nurse I must understand the preventative measures for diarrhea and the etiologies of diarrhea in infants. Proper hygiene and exclusive breastfeeding are some of the well-known preventative measures (Rahayu & Ismarwati, 2021). Knowledge of the geographical locations where there is a high incidence of diarrhea in infants may trigger the initiation of preventative primary healthcare campaigns and education to improve wellness.
