NSG 604 Module III DQ 2

One example of an infectious disease from my practice area is Influenza (Flu). The influenza virus is highly contagious and can easily spread from person to person, making the flu a common and widespread illness. There are three main types of the virus: Influenza A, B, and C; all of which can change and evolve over time (Zhang et al., 2020). Because of this, outbreaks of the virus occur around the world every year. Factors that may increase an individual’s risk of contracting the flu include having close contact with someone who has it, having a weakened immune system, or living or working in large crowds or closed-in spaces (Lu et al., 2022). Vaccination remains one of the most effective methods for protecting against this virus.

Influenza (flu) can spread quickly in close contact settings. There are several common sources of transmission for the virus. Respiratory droplets from an infected person can travel through coughing or sneezing; close contact such as shaking hands or hugging an infected individual can also transmit the virus, as well as touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching one’s own mouth, nose, or eyes (Choe & Lee, 2020). It is important to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus, such as washing hands frequently and avoiding contact with people showing flu-like symptoms. Vigilance and precaution are key when it comes to fighting the flu.

Knowing sources and modes of transmission for Influenza (Flu) impacts how other healthcare professionals and I care for patients with flu by emphasizing the importance of infection control measures such as hand hygiene, use of masks, and covering coughs and sneezes. The knowledge also impacts the development and implementation of plans to mitigate community spread by prioritizing measures such as vaccinating high-risk populations, promoting good hygiene practices, and educating the public on the modes of transmission (Choe & Lee, 2020). Additionally, identifying and isolating infected individuals quickly, and implementing contact tracing can help prevent further spread of the disease.
