Health Promotion
The levels of health promotion can be classified into primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Each of these levels shares the similarity of ensuring that the health of the population is improved or maintained. They also aim at minimizing the effects of a disease on individuals, families, and the community as a whole. The three levels of health promotion however have some differences. Primary level of health promotion aims at the adoption of health interventions that protect individuals from a disease and promote health. Interventions such as health education are utilized in this level to create awareness and promote the desired behavioral changes.
The secondary level of health promotion focuses on the screening of individuals for diseases and the initiation of early treatments. The aim of secondary level of health promotion prevents disease progression and strengthens the adoption of health behaviors in those at risk of a health problem. Tertiary level of health promotion focuses on the actual treatment of a health problem. The aim of the interventions that are adopted at this level is to prevent complications and promote rehabilitation. The above levels of health promotion determine the educational needs of the patient. For example, the aim of education in the primary level of disease prevention is creating awareness and promoting lifestyle and behavioral change in a population or patient. The aim of education in the tertiary level of health promotion on the other hand is to provide the client with knowledge on disease management or living with the disease (Madanat, Arredondo & Ayala, 2015). Therefore, the level of health promotion determines the educational needs of a patient.
