NURS 6003 Discussion: Strategies for Academic Portfolios

When assembling a portfolio, professionals in different fields should focus on elements that demonstrate academic achievements. This might include course syllabi, exams and/or papers they have written, letters of recommendation from professors or employers, and any other awards or scholarships that may have been received. There is also the need to incorporate a strong GPA or other notable accomplishments which should be prominently included in the portfolio (Burns, 2018). One strategy for including academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals is to frame them in terms of the skills they demonstrate. For example, when publishing an article on a new methodology developed, I could frame that as an evidence of my expertise in methodological innovation. Another strategy is to highlight how the experience has shaped my thinking or practice.

Additionally, in case of little professional experience, I will think of ways to highlight my skills and abilities. This might include volunteering or interning in relevant positions, writing an article or blog post on a topic related to my field of study, or participating in online discussions related to the area of interest (Cusack & Smith, 2020). Walden University emphasizes on social change through the development of transferable skills, this is perceived as a great way to show how the academic work has prepared different students for the job purposes.
Walden University emphasizes also emphasizes on the development of professional experience through engagement in diverse academic activities. One way that Walden helps students develop professional experience is by requiring them to complete a capstone project (Walden University, n.d). In this project, students work with a real-world client to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in their program of study. This gives students the opportunity to work on a real project, with real deadlines, and under the supervision of a professor who is an expert in the field.
Another way that Walden helps students gain professional experience is by providing opportunities for students to engage in research (Walden University, n.d). For example, Walden offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in its annual Research Week conference. These activities align with my academic activities and accomplishments into professional development goals.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Week’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

To Prepare:

Reflect on strategies that you can pursue in developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.
Review one or more samples from your own research of resources focused on portfolio development.
By Day 3
