WEEK 4 DISCUSSION
CHANGE THEORIES, SYSTEMS THINKING, IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE
Never have we had vast amounts of data at our fingertips like we do today. However, before we can meaningfully access and use data for interpretation, it must be transformed. To derive meaning from the data collected, you need to understand that data collection is rapidly changing and constantly evolving. The methods with which data is collected, analyzed, and used to justify, support, or lend credibility to research aims, are all important considerations for the nurse researcher. As it relates to Big Data, the methods of how data is collected, analyzed, and used for implementation is also important. While the availability of data collection certainly has its advantages, many researchers point to the concerns over Big Data.
For this Discussion, reflect on your understanding of Big Data and the implications for implementation. Consider the impact of research as it relates to collection via Big Data and consider how this impact might lead to potential barriers in implementation and practice gaps. Reflect on your experience and consider how these key issues might impact nursing practice.

NURS 8210 Week 4 Discussion Main Post
Some of the informatics frameworks and models that can be applied to healthcare organizations and nursing practice include Benner’s Novice to Expert model, Schiwirian’s model, Graves and Corcoran’s model, Turley’s model, and Data Information Knowledge (D-I-K) framework. One of the key principles that I can leverage from these frameworks to support my practice is that informatics is like a linear progression, whereby data progresses into information and knowledge (Cato et al., 2020). Graves and Corcoran’s model asserts that knowledge is a combination of information. Like Graves and Corcoran’s model, the DIKW framework states that data leads to information, information to knowledge, and knowledge to wisdom (Cato et al., 2020). In my psychiatric practice, I can combine data to produce information that generates knowledge, which will facilitate me to observe relationships, create opinions, and make predictions.
Turley’s model presents the three fundamental components of informatics: Cognitive science, Information science, and Computer science. The model states that without cognitive science, decision-making, information processing, and the development of tools and computer interfaces would be challenging (Sipes, 2024). I can leverage these concepts in my psychiatric nursing practice to understand decision-making and information processing and take part in developing appropriate tools to support nursing processes. Furthermore, I have learned from Schiwirian’s model that informatics entails identifying information needs, resolving the needs, and attaining nursing goals and objectives (Wensing & Grol, 2019). Benner’s Novice to Expert model states that the nurse should continuously demonstrate the ability to acquire and exhibit specific skills beginning with the first student experience. I can leverage this practice by continuously engaging in learning situations and developing skills in my career.
