Education Disparity Essay
Education disparity among impoverished families and those from high-income families is high. According to Flores (2017), students from high-income families perform better in schools than those from lower-income families. Some of the students from low-income families lack enough money to attend colleges. As Lv (2017) states, 82% of the students from high-income families attend colleges, while only 52% of the students from impoverished families proceed to college. Besides, the students who transition to college are on average and are primarily ill-prepared for the journey. Children from low-income families are behind their peers (García & Weiss, 2017). This makes it hard for them to catch up and reduces their chance of getting into higher education.
Possible reasons why this disparity is real
- Lack of enough money to cater for the education expenses (Flores, 2017)
- Racism- This occurs when the white students are given priority to access funds to cater for their education while students from other races do not have easier access to educational funds (García & Weiss, 2017)
- Political reasons make it hard for impoverished students to access better education
- Weak educational foundation since some of the students start attending school behind their peers (Flores, 2017)
- Lack of enough federal funds in public schools while private schools receive a lot of funds making it easy for wealthy students to access quality education (García & Weiss, 2017)
Possible Micro Solutions (Individual)
- Look for better ways of raising their income
- Embracing technology to make it easier to learn from home (García & Weiss, 2017)
- Embrace tutoring system to help catch up with the peers
- Provide bicycles and other cheaper ways of transportation to schools
Possible Macro Solutions (Systems and Laws)
- Increase funds to the public schools
- Ensure funds are given equally among students
- Invest more resources to support low-income families (Flores, 2017
- Address overcrowding of students in public schools
- Ensure all public schools have the needed resources
- Raise the standards of teachers, especially in public institutions (García & Weiss, 2017)
