Organizations usually take initiatives to improve their operations, efficiency, and effectiveness. Therefore, leaders usually employ different strategies to meet such set standards of improvement. One of the strategies used is organizational development, which entails processes and programs undertaken to help improve an organization’s efficiency. Organizational development has various roles in contemporary organizations. One of the roles is that it helps organizations to build adequate capacity on how to deal with change, enhance the organization’s performance, and create a positive work environment (Burke, 2022). Organizational development also helps in the development of leadership capabilities at every organizational level through strategies such as leadership assessments, training, mentoring, and coaching. Organizational development is also vital or crucial for managing the performance of the organization through setting an appropriate framework with staff and individual goals, provision of regular feedback, and skill enhancement (Griffin et al.,2020). As such, organizational development helps prepare the organization for change and other possible complexities.
Change is an inevitability. Therefore, organizations usually find themselves in need of change. Hence, they have to be well prepared for its implementation. Therefore, organizational development plays a role in helping organizations prepare for or implement change. Through organizational development, organizations get a chance to conduct an assessment of an organization’s current status and highlight areas that may need improvement. Therefore, the organization can adequately prepare for the change. Change implementation requires that stakeholders get engaged appropriately; therefore, through organizational development, stakeholders are engaged in time, which then triggers their support for a proposed change and a successful implementation (Errida & Lotfi, 2021). For example, in my organization, organizational development helps identify patient care areas that may need improvement, allowing the leaders to take proactive steps and trigger a change for improvement.
