Making Sense of Arguments

Over the years, the debate about same-sex marriage has continued to spread in the country. Some people feel that same-sex marriage should not be allowed, while others argue that same-sex marriage should be allowed. Same-sex marriage should be allowed to happen since it will enable same-sex couples to have a normal life. This essay will explain why the federal government should authorize same-sex marriages.

According to Soucek (2017), equality means having the same choices for all people. Therefore, allowing same-sex marriages will ensure that same-sex couples have equal rights as they will not be denied the opportunity to marry or get married to the person they want. Equality permits a person to make choices that make them happy, and choosing the person to be intimate with should not have restrictions.

Allowing same-sex marriages will help reduce discrimination and its effects (Ofosu et al., 2019). Soucek (2017), while citing a 2009/2010 survey, notes that 58% of the people in same-sex marriages claimed that they were not being given the same rights and respect as other married couples. Some of them claimed that they were referred to as not married in official documents. Following this, making same-sex marriages legal will make it easy for such couples, as their relationships and unions will be respected.

Although allowing same-sex marriages leads to equality. Drabble et al. (2021) argue that it denies a child the chance to have a mother or a father. It is better for a child to grow under the influence of both mother and father, and not two parents with similar genders. Besides, same-sex marriages do not align with religion since it violates the moral order established by God (Drabble et al., 2021). Therefore, allowing same-sex marriages will go against some of the natural laws that define how people should live.

The federal government should allow same-sex marriages to happen to ensure the affected persons have a normal life. Equality and respect should be given to all people, regardless of their relationship. However, some objections are still valid since children are better off growing with both parents present.
