Building Communication and Collaboration Skills
Nursing professionals work as members of a large, diverse health care team. To coordinate care and sustain high patient outcomes, nurses should communicate and interact with other professionals to formulate patient-centered treatment plans. Central to successful communication is awareness of personal communication skills, which should be progressively improved for healthier interactions.
I use various resources to improve awareness of my communication skills in the professional setting. They include online articles, YouTube, communication self-tests, and colleagues. For instance, multiple online articles explain the essential communication skills for nurses and how to improve as a professional. A suitable example is the article by Liotard (2020) that describes the importance of clarity, active listening, and cultural awareness. The author explains the importance of acquiring these communication skills and their importance in the professional setting. In a different article, Faubion (2023) describes the skills necessary for achieving therapeutic communication, such as eye contact, patience, and being receptive. Such articles help me to assess how I communicate and the areas I should address to be a better communicator. YouTube tutorials describe how to communicate clearly and prevent communication barriers. My colleagues also provide feedback regarding how I communicate, which also helps me to understand my weaknesses and fix them accordingly.
Nurses bring different communication skills to collaborative interactions, which are vital for teamwork and other positive outcomes. One of the most effective skills is dialogue. Through dialogues, individuals speak and are listened to without interruption (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). Such communication fosters a culture of respect since team members can exchange ideas and express their opinions openly. Other essential skills include open communication and different perspectives. Generally, these skills are important in health practice since they improve interactions and patient outcomes. As Bok et al. (2020) noted, clear and respectful communication fosters a culture of trust and enables interprofessional team members to work toward a shared goal. Open communication also minimizes communication-related errors that ruin patient-provider relationships and increase health care costs. Therefore, dialogue, respectful communication, and other skills that nurses bring to collaborative interactions are critical for high patient outcomes and team-driven practice.
