Characteristics of a Culture of Excellence
Culture refers to the manner of undertaking tasks in an organization. It encompasses the habits that guide the organizational activities such as decision-making and the provision of patient care services. Organizations constantly strive to create and improve their culture of excellence. The culture has several characteristics. One of the characteristics is that it has compelling vision that is communicated to stakeholders and understood. The organizational stakeholders understand and believe in the developed vision (Smith & Plunkett, 2019). They understand their expected roles, responsibilities, and the initiatives they must implement for the vision to be achieved.
The other characteristic of a culture of excellence is that organizational stakeholders have a clear purpose and meaning in contributing to the organization’s success. The stakeholders feel the meaningfulness of their contribution to the success of their organization. They also have the common inspiration of achieving the desired goals, objectives, mission, and vision of their organizations. There is also the focus on the employee needs in the culture of excellence. Organizations consider the employees their crucial assets for success. As a result, they implement employee-centered interventions to promote their personal and professional development (Clark, 2019). The interventions also strengthen their mastery in service provision, hence, the realization of the organization’s vision.
Organizations with culture of excellence also have highly effective and collaborative teams. The employees recognize the value of interprofessional collaboration for the realization of optimum outcomes such as safety, quality, and efficiency in the care process. The collaboration also ensures collective realization of the set mission and vision in the organization. A culture of excellence is also characterized by open communication. The employees can express themselves to the management and organizational leadership without fearing intimidation. There is the two-way flow of communication between the employees and management (Ayatollahi & Zeraatkar, 2020; Beal & Riley, 2019). Open communication strengthens trust, honesty, and accountability among the employees, leading to excellence in service provision.
Mission, Vision, and Values
The selected organization is the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization that provides a range of services such disaster relief, blood donation, training and certification for healthcare providers and the population. The mission of the organization is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in times of emergencies. It achieves this mission by mobilizing the power of volunteers globally and the generosity of donors. The vision statement of the American Red Cross is to be always be there in times of need through its strong network of partners, donors, and volunteers. The organization’s vision is also to aspire and turn compassion into action so that the vulnerable and affected populations receive hope, shelter, care, and prepared for disasters (Redcross.org, n.d.). The organization’s core values include humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
The American Red Cross’s vision, mission, and values are interrelated. The vision provides the overall future focus of the organization in its service delivery. The vision statement provides the organization’s long-term goals. This statement shapes the organization’s mission. It gives its sense of purpose in service delivery and target audience for its services. The vision and mission statements inform the values. Values guide the organization’s actions to those in need in times of disaster (Redcross.org, n.d.). For example, by being impartial, the organization provides its service to all irrespective of their backgrounds, leading to the realization of the set mission and vision.
The mission, vision, and values of the American Red Cross support a culture of excellence. For example, the organization’s focus on universality as its value encourage its members to consider all societies are equal. As a result, members are proactively involved in promoting equity to access to emergency care services in times of need. The organization’s focus on neutrality also ensures that its members do not engage in any controversial issues for excellence in service delivery to the needy. The mission statement, which focuses on alleviating human suffering promotes the highest possible level of dedication from the donors and volunteers, hence, excellence in service delivery (Redcross.org, n.d.). Therefore, the American Red Cross’s mission, vision, and values support a culture of excellence.
Application of Two Specific Leadership Strategies
The leadership style adopted by an organization determines if a culture of excellence will be created or not. Organizations should encourage the adoption of effective leadership strategies that will promote a culture of excellence. One of the leadership strategies is delegation and empowerment. Leaders should contribute to the development of the desired competencies among their followers through delegation. They should also empower them through initiatives such as coaching, mentorship, supervision, and offering training opportunities. Delegation and empowerment encourage the employees to deliver best of their abilities and engage in activities that would contribute to the realization of common goals (Moon et al., 2019). Additional strategies that can be incorporated into delegation and empowerment is motivation and rewarding performance for excellence. Delegation and empowerment support Chamberlain Care Model by encourage students to explore their potentials in the profession. It also encourages them to seek support in their areas of weaknesses, hence, their academic excellence.
The second leadership strategy that can be used to create a culture of excellence is guiding the desired work habits. Leaders should lead others as examples. They should show the behaviors, skills, and attitudes that are required for the creation of a culture of excellence in the organization. Leaders should also coach and encourage the consistent use of best habits in task undertaking for optimum outcomes. Over time, the learned behaviors, attitudes, beliefs and practices form part of the organization’s routines, hence, the culture of excellence (Beal & Riley, 2019; Smith & Plunkett, 2019). Guiding the desired work habits supports the Chamberlain Care Model by ensuring that students get the guidance they need in achieving their desired excellence. Guiding habits also helps students learn the best practices that they need to succeed in their profession.
Conclusion
In summary, a culture of excellence is important for the organization’s success. The mission, vision, and values of the American Red Cross promote a culture of excellence. Nurses should explore effective leadership strategies that support a culture of excellence. Strategies such as delegation and empowerment and guiding the desired habits support the Chamberlain Care Model.
