Patient-Centered Care: A Person-Centred Care Model Revisited

Caring continues to be a central concept in nursing; however, the context for caring is transforming, resulting in conceptual and theoretical advancements related to the evolving healthcare practice settings. McCormack and McCance originally developed a Person-Centred Nursing (PCN) Framework in 2006 and updated it in 2010 that can be applied to practice in complex healthcare systems (McCormack & McCance, 2006; McCormack & McCance, 2017). The PCN Framework provides a standard of care for practice and is a multidimensional process that places emphasis on the person as the center of care delivery (McCance, McCormack, & Dewing, 2011). The PCN Framework fosters outcomes related to therapeutic relationships through respecting individuals as persons and partners in care. The Person-Centred Care Nursing Framework consists of four constructs: prerequisites, the care environment, person-centred processes, and outcomes (McCance et al., 2011). To deliver effective care, one must work from the outer circle first to the core. McCormack, B. & McCance, T. (2017)Prerequisites focus on the attributes of the nurses and include being professionally competent, having developed interpersonal skills, being committed to the job, being able to demonstrate clarity of beliefs and values, and knowing self. The care environment focuses on the context in which care is delivered and includes appropriate skill mix, systems that facilitate shared decision making, effective staff relationships, organizational systems that are supportive, the sharing of power, the potential for innovation and risk taking, and the physical environment. Person-centred processes focus on delivering care through a range of activities and include working with a patient’s beliefs and values to overcome this gap between the concept and the reality of person-centred care we have developed the Person-Centred Nursing Framework…engagement, having sympathetic presence, sharing decision making, and providing holistic care. Outcomes, the central component of the Framework, are the results of effective, person-centred nursing and include: satisfaction with care, involvement in care, feeling of well-being, and creating a therapeutic environment. (McCance, McCormack, & Dewing, 2011).

NR 531 Week 3 Discussion Question 2, Shared Governance and the Magnet Model

The purpose of the NR-531 Week 3 Discussion Question 2 is to analyze the shared governance and the magnet model. This project should include evidence to support the student’s project and be written in a scholarly manner. The assignment is to be completed in the role of a nurse executive in a healthcare system. In order to complete this assignment, the student should conduct a search for examples of magnet reports, and consult the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet website.

The assignment is due on Sunday, at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students may begin posting no earlier than Sunday, but the deadline is Sunday at 11:59 p.m. (MT). After the Friday deadline, students may post questions or comments about the assignment in the weekly Q&A Discussion topic. The length of the paper is three pages, excluding title and reference pages. The paper should be properly referenced using resources available in the Roussel textbook.

In addition, students may post questions about the assignment on the weekly Q & A Discussion topic. The threaded discussion rubric is located in the Course resources. If students have a question regarding the question, they can post it in the weekly Q & A Discussion. The final submission should be made by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT. The last day for submitting the assignment is Sunday.

The submission date for the assignment is Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. The due date is Sunday, and subsequent posts should be made by Monday, 11:59 p.m. UT. The Q & A discussion topic may contain questions or comments related to the assignment. During this time, the Q&A Discussion topic will be available for students to ask questions.

The weekly Q&A discussion is the next step in the assignment. The assignment must be submitted in MS Word format. The file must end with “.docx” extension. It should not exceed three (3) pages (excluding the title and reference page). The NR-531 Week 3 Discussion Question 2 should not exceed three (3) pages, excluding the reference page. You can use the resources in the MT-only classroom.

The assignment is due on Sunday. You may start posting your paper on Sunday. However, the submission must be done by 11:59 p.m. MT on Wednesday. During Week 3, all discussions must be completed on Sunday. This is also the deadline for the first post in the assignment. The next post must be on the Friday before the Saturday of the week. If the discussion is not submitted by Sunday, it will be marked as late.

In the first paragraph, state the purpose of the assignment. Explain the issue from the Magnet model. Discuss how it will impact the healthcare environment. Then, identify the components of the Magnet report. You can find examples in textbooks and the internet. You may also reference resources in your text. You will need a citation page. It is important to cite at least three sources in your paper.

As a student, you may also ask questions about this topic in the weekly discussion thread. Make sure that you use the appropriate resources to support your research. If you need to reference a resource, you can cite it in your document. The other resources for this assignment can be found online, including the text from your textbook. If you need to, you can use the links in your thesis to further analyze the topic.

In the NR 531 Week 3 Discussion question, you will need to present the evidence from the Magnet model. You should include an executive summary. The executive summary should contain a brief introduction paragraph and a summary of the topic. Then, you should briefly describe the issue from the Magnet model and discuss the impact on the healthcare environment. In the final section, you should provide three sources of scholarly empirical evidence for your topic.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.

Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.

One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.

I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Lopes Write Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.

Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.

Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?

Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:

Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.

Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

NR531 Week 3 Discussion Question 1, Communication

The NR531 Week 3 Graded Discussion covers the concepts of shared governance and the Magnet Model. Students will need to analyze the topic and provide a response to the question about communication. Posting to a discussion thread is worth up to 25 points. To earn the maximum number of points, students must post at least twice on separate days. To obtain full credit, students must make three substantive posts on three different days.

To write an effective discussion, students should limit the use of direct quotes and provide meaningful context. They should add no more than 15 words to the discussion and be original and relevant to the topic. Direct quotes will be deducted under Grammar, Syntax, and APA. This rubric will help students write their own discussions. They should follow a simple format that avoids the use of acronyms, too.

Good writing limits the use of direct quotes. They should be no more than 15 words and must add to the discussion. If they do, they will be deducted under Syntax, Grammar, and APA. To save time, students should create their own threads. The discussion rubric can be found in the Course resources section. In order to submit a well-written discussion, students should use a structured rubric.

As part of the discussion, students should include a list of sources. Using references to other texts is also acceptable. However, students should limit the use of direct quotes. They should not use more than 15 words. In addition, they must add to the discussion in a substantive way. If they don’t, they will be deducted under the categories of Grammar, Syntax, and APA.

The topic of a discussion is not limited to a single source. Instead, students should include relevant examples, references, and examples. They should include the same information and cite them accordingly. The threaded discussion rubric is found in the Course resources. You can use it as a guideline when you write your discussion. If you follow the guidelines, you will write a good paper! So, what are you waiting for? Get started with the NR531 Week 3!

The threaded discussion is a threaded discussion. You can post your comments on the threaded discussion as early as Sunday evening (MT). The Week 3 Discussion Question 1 Communication assignment is due on Wednesday at 11:59 pm. The assignment will not have a word count, but it should be interesting. It will also demonstrate your ability to write in an analytical manner. This course will help you improve your communication skills!

In a threaded discussion, students may post their thoughts any time they wish. The only thing that you must remember is that the threaded discussion is a standardized discussion. You must have a clear outline and stick to it. The professor will assess whether your ideas are relevant to the topic or not. The NR531 Week 3 Discussion Question 1 outlines the topic, and you must discuss the content of the paper.

The discussion question is a great way to learn about how to communicate in a professional setting. You should always avoid using direct quotes in your writing. These are only allowed if they add substantively to the discussion. For example, in a threaded discussion, you should limit yourself to using direct quotes. Similarly, direct quotations must be less than 15 words. They should also contribute to the discussion.

For this NR531 Week 3 Discussion Question, students should limit their use of direct quotes. Unless they have a compelling reason to quote someone else, it will not be considered proper. You must limit your use of direct quotes to no more than 15 words, and they must add substantively to your discussion. The grading rubric for this NR531 Week 3 Discussion Question is different than that used for core courses.

You may start posting your responses as early as Sunday morning of the previous week. Most weeks open at 12:01 a.m. MT. The discussions close at 11:59 p.m. MT. This NR531 Week 3 Discussion Question 1 requires students to use APA style. There are no word limits for this NR531 Week 3 Discussion Question 1. There are no word limits. Participants can begin posting no later than Sunday, and the discussions must be completed by Wednesday at 11:59

p.m.

Important information for writing discussion questions and participation

Welcome to class

Hello class and welcome to the class and I will be your instructor for this course. This is a -week course and requires a lot of time commitment, organization, and a high level of dedication. Please use the class syllabus to guide you through all the assignments required for the course. I have also attached the classroom policies to this announcement to know your expectations for this course. Please review this document carefully and ask me any questions if you do. You could email me at any time or send me a message via the “message” icon in halo if you need to contact me. I check my email regularly, so you should get a response within 24 hours. If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.

If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
