Group Therapy Techniques
The therapist in the video used some group therapy techniques. One of them is incorporating gratitude activities into the therapy. Gratitude activities entail having patients to explore the life aspects that they feel grateful about them. Gratitude activities help patients to appreciate their positive situations and qualities, which improves their psychological wellbeing. The other technique in the video is goal visualization. Goal visualization entails having patients to set the goals they would wish to achieve. The technique helps patients to have specific activities intended to help them overcome their challenges(Cregg & Cheavens, 2021). The therapist asked the patient the things he would wish to do for her daughter, as a way of helping him become goal-oriented in his approach to managing his problem.
What the Therapist Did Well
The therapist did well in some aspects. One of them is asking open-ended questions to the patients. Open-ended questions are effective in the group therapy sessions, as they help patients to explore deeper their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. The therapist also did well in adopting silence as a therapeutic technique. Silence makes patients feel in control of the situation and continue exploring their issues in detail. Empathy shows that the therapist is understanding, listens, and experiences the things the patient is sharing(Moudatsou et al., 2020). The therapist also showed empathy. He acknowledged the challenges experienced by the patient, which made the patient feel appreciated.
Something I Would Handle Differently
One of the things I would have handled differently in the video is setting rules before the therapy session. The other participants in the video interrupted the patient in the early session. Interruptions during the session may lead to patient feeling unappreciated or not valued. As a result, I would have set rules at the beginning of the session to help the participants understand the expected behaviors(Weinberg, 2021). I would also ensure that each member understands their role in the group sessions to facilitate respect and order in their interactions.
Insight Gained from the Therapist Handling of the Group Therapy
I learned from the therapist that one should incorporate therapeutic strategies into a therapy session to help patients to overcome their problems. The therapist was keen to implement strategies such as open communication, active listening, asking open-ended questions, and using empathy to help patients to understand themselves better. I also learned from the video that the therapist should not impose solutions to the participants. Instead, their role entails taking a passive and facilitative role by asking the patients to explore some of the solutions they can adopt based on their experiences(Weinberg, 2021).
Handling a Difficult Situation with a Disruptive Group Member
Therapist often experience disruptive members in their group therapy sessions. One of the ways in which I would handle a disruptive group member is by going over the group rules with the member to prevent the behavior. Going over the rules will remind them about the expected behaviors and consequences of non-adherence with the set rules. The other way is focusing on building trust with the group members. A focus on building trust will strengthen the confidence that the group members have towards each other, which minimizes the potentials of disruptive behaviors(Weinberg, 2021). The last option would be dropping the member from the group if the above strategies fail.
Eliciting Participation in My Group
Active participation among members is important in group therapy. I would adopt different strategies to elicit participation in a group therapy. One of them would be encouraging open communication. Open communication among members would encourage the team members to express themselves freely and explore ways to overcome their problems. The other strategy to elicit participation would be fostering respect. I would ensure that team members respect views, values, and experiences of each other. Respect would ensure that members feel valued in the group. I would also orient members, involve them in setting the expected outcomes and their roles to facilitate team cohesion. Through it, each of the participants would be actively involved in identifying ways in which they can overcome their challenges. I would also use empathic, affirming statements throughout the group sessions. I would also give feedback about the group process and communicate consistently to inform the group members about their achievements.
Anticipation
The phases of group therapy include forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. I would expect group members to show conflict avoidance in the forming stage since they do not know each other well. I also expect them not to know the expected outcomes and their expected behaviors in this stage. I expect group members to express differences in viewpoints in the storming phase, as group tasks and processes are being developed(Ajufo, 2019). I also expect team members to engage in setting goals that may be unrealistic.
I expect team members to set and agree on processes and procedures in the norming phase. I also anticipate seeing them participating in shared problem solving and exploring their feelings and thoughts. I expect the team members to collaborate and own decisions in the performing stage. They also provide and receive feedback. They understand their strengths and weaknesses and engage in constructive activities that promote recovery. I expect team members to have developed effective coping strategies in the adjourning stage(Ajufo, 2019). They also demonstrate readiness to implement the strategies in their lives and are ready for group session termination.
Benefits and Challenges of Group Therapy
Group therapy is associated with several benefits. First, they provide patients the support they need to overcome their mental health problems. Group sessions also provide patients safe spaces to express their feelings comfortably without fear. Group therapy also helps patients to learn from others. They learn from group members with similar experiences about effective strategies to overcome their struggles. Patients can also develop social skills from group therapy(Ajufo, 2019). Despite the benefits, group therapy has limitations such as lack of confidentiality, as patients share their experiences with others, may be time consuming unlike individual therapy, and not patient-centered.
Conclusion
Overall, the therapist handled the group therapy session well. I gained insights from the video that would inform my practice. Group therapy has several benefits to patients with mental health problems. Therapist should aim at optimizing recovery outcomes while minimizing the limitations of group therapy.
