Lewin’s three-step change theory advances the idea that the behaviors of an individual are influenced by driving and restraining forces that pull in contrasting directions (Burnes, 2020). The driving forces are typified by positive forces that encourage individuals to steer toward the desired directions. Conversely, restraining forces refer to negative forces that contradict change by motivating people to steer toward undesired directions. On the other hand, the social cognitive theory states that behavioral change is influenced by attributes such as personality, attitude, and environment. This theory is founded on the idea that behavior change occurs when a person is self-inspired and has self-efficacy (Islam et al., 2023). This involves being brave to accept change and self-inspiration to go through the change process.

 The definitions of these two change theories indicate that the basic assumption in social cognitive theory is that change is motivated by the outcomes. As such, the anticipated outcomes should inspire an individual to accept and maintain behavior change (Hagger & Hamilton, 2022). Contrarily, Lewin’s three-step change theory contradicts the social cognitive theory assumption by remaining goal-oriented, pragmatic, and impartial (Ratana et al., 2020). Nonetheless, both theories share the idea that behavior change in individuals is influenced by external forces.

The theory that makes the most sense in the implementation of the EBP intervention is Lewin’s three-step change theory. This is because this theory is goal-oriented, pragmatic, and impartial, making it appropriate to deal with external forces and factors, which are common in nursing practice. The preceptor is contemplating using Lewin’s three-step change theory to inspire positive outcomes by motivating healthcare professionals to adopt the proposed EBP intervention.
