According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2021), The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education, offers a framework for preparing nurses as members of the nursing discipline, and mirrors the expectations across the trajectory of nursing education and applied experience. The AACN identifies ten core domains representing the essence of professional nursing practice and the expected competencies. Consequently, the domains I am interested in are patient-centered care, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, leadership, and teamwork and collaboration. Patient-centered care emphasizes the importance of offering care that respects and responds to individual patient needs and concerns, especially cultural practices.
Evidence-based practice is an essential domain as it highlights the significance of integrating the best available evidence in clinical practice and patient preferences to offer interventions that will respond better to patients’ needs based on informed healthcare decisions (AACN, 2021). The leadership domain is critical since as a nurse, one must be at the forefront in advocating patient needs and the professional welfare of colleagues. Quality improvement is important as nurses are expected to offer quality care for better patient outcomes. Therefore, quality improvement implores nurses to continuously monitor and improve the safety and quality of the healthcare systems and interventions. Teamwork and collaboration ensure nurses work with other healthcare professionals to offer safe and quality care for better patient outcomes.
Successful students demonstrate certain characteristics that include self-discipline, time management, highly motivated and active learning, and being highly organized. For instance, self-discipline entails staying focused and motivated, even when encountering distractions and challenges. Time management means students can effectively manage their time by prioritizing tasks, having goals, and creating a study schedule (Song et al., 2020).

Successful students also have critical thinking skills and effective communication attributes which allow them to analyze information, evaluate evidence, and apply knowledge to solve issues and effectively communicate such solutions to stakeholders (Hampton et al., 2020). To succeed, an individual should set clear and achievable goals, have the inspiration and motivation to succeed, develop a practical study schedule, actively participate in class and teamwork, and seek assistance when needed to sharpen skills.
The role model or mentor to support my professional growth is my nurse manager who encourages most of us to seek advanced qualification by getting more training and better qualifications through advanced degrees in nursing. The manager is instrumental as she advises nurses to stay focused as they pursue their academic and professional progress and development, especially in using the latest research evidence to improve care among patients.
