Clinical Preventative Intervention
Healthcare institutions and healthcare professionals continuously work towards improving population health and promoting wellness through the formulation of various ways of improving access to care as well as addressing the existing barriers. Arguably, access to care enables individuals to benefit from both preventive and medical services which is a prerequisite to improved population health and health outcome (Ahmad et al., 2021). However, several barriers to access to healthcare include lack of health services and health services, cost constraints, communication barriers, stigma, low socioeconomic status, lack of time, work status, and geographic location (Lazar & Davenport, 2018). Overcoming the barriers to access requires the incorporation of translational research to incorporate the use of telehealth.
Telehealth is a compliment to traditional face-to-face delivery of health services including patient education, medical services, and health information services through digital communications (Ahmad et al., 2021). Healthcare providers and patients communicate using phones and computers through text messages, video conferencing, remote patient monitoring systems, and mobile health apps. Telehealth technology has helped in reducing the gap in access to care, especially among low- and middle-income people living in remote rural settings with chronic conditions (Lazar & Davenport, 2018). Telehealth allows healthcare personnel and patients to communicate constantly as healthcare providers identify patient needs and come up with effective care plans and follow-up arrangements. Notably, the value of telehealth was appreciated and rose during the wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which was spreading rapidly (Arora et al., 2022). The restrictions for public and social gatherings were installed to prevent the spread. Consequently, access to healthcare was also restricted especially for old and patients with comorbid conditions who were at increased risk of infection and death from Covid-19 infection. Telehealth helped in bridging the gap and improving access to care for various patients with chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension. In addition, various healthcare institutions in the US integrated the use of telehealth to enhance access to care for patients at any time, irrespective of cost and travel constraints. According to Lazar and Davenport (2018), Telehealth supports the objectives of the affordable care act (ACA) of enhancing access to healthcare.
