Review of Current Healthcare Issues
The selected national issue for analysis is nursing shortage. Statistics nursing shortage in a crucial problem in the United States, with projections showing that more than 275000 nurses will be needed between 2020 and 2030(Ladden & Hassmiller, 2023). Nursing shortage affects my setting in several ways. Firstly, it increases the workload for the remaining staff. The shortage places immense burden to the existing staff due to high patient to nurse ratio. High workload predisposes nurses to negative health outcomes such as burnout, occupational stress, and decreased productivity. Nursing shortage also affects the quality of care offered in the setting. The risk of errors and delays in the delivery of healthcare services increases with nursing shortage. There is also the issue of high operational costs in the organization(Buerhaus, 2021). The high costs arise from the increased need to hire, train, and retain new nurses costs incurred from nurses who leave their jobs.

Social determinants contribute to nursing shortage. They include the changes in population dynamics that result in increased demand of nursing services, large number of retiring nurses, population growth, and an imbalance in nurses exiting and joining the workforce. The practice site has responded to the issue of nursing shortage by implementing measures to retain its nursing workforce. It provides nurses with flexible work schedules, opportunities for professional development, and better remuneration. The hospital also strives to reduce the workload for its staff by hiring additional nurses to mitigate the potential of high workload and burnout among them(Drennan & Ross, 2019). The hospital also has reward scheme for nurses for their performance. For example, best performing nurses from each department receive rewards, as a way of motivating the staff to improve its performance.
