The selected sponsor is the Global Fund that is dedicated in funding presidents in fighting HIV/AIDs. The selected partner is the World Health Organization that focus on providing evidence-based information about AIDs. The selected partner is UNAIDS that advocates for zero new HIV infections and HIV-related deaths worldwide (Alcamo, 2018).

Part 3: Narrative

Why should HIV/AIDs be Included in the Agenda for Legislation?

HIV/AIDs is a critical healthcare issue that should be included in the agenda for legislation. Despite significant improvement in diagnosis and management of HIV/AIDs in the US, the percentage of Americans living with this disease has increased disturbingly (Hall et al., 2017). According to CDC (2016) approximately 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV. This high rate has, in turn, increased potential for HIV transmission. Therefore, HIV/AIDs should be included in the agenda for legislation to lower the high prevalence and transmission rate of this disease. The legislations should criminalize the exposure or transmission of HIV to reduce the high HIV incidence.

The Role of the Nurse in Agenda Setting for healthcare Issues

Nurses play a significant role in agenda setting for various healthcare issues. Nurses spend more time with patients than other healthcare professional during care delivery. They understand today’s health care system and changes required to improve the quality and safety of patient care (Arabi et al, 2014). Therefore, nurses use their experiences and knowledge to set agenda, thus influencing a change in the current laws or regulations governing the practices of the entire health care system (Lamb et al., 2015). Nurses are required to step beyond the setting of their practices to participate in the agenda setting. Agenda setting requires nurses to understand the world of policies and politics (Milstead & Short, 2019). In most cases, nurse feel less prepared for this evolving role. However, they strive to influence health policy to address current challenges in the healthcare system, thus improving the quality and safety of patient care. This goal is achieved by initiating policy proposals, influencing the adoption of health policy, and incorporating the enacted legislation into their clinical practices.

Assignment: Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief
It may seem to you that healthcare has been a national topic of debate among political leaders for as long as you can remember.

Healthcare has been a policy item and a topic of debate not only in recent times but as far back as the administration of the second U.S. president, John Adams. In 1798, Adams signed legislation requiring that 20 cents per month of a sailor’s paycheck be set aside for covering their medical bills. This represented the first major piece of U.S. healthcare legislation, and the topic of healthcare has been woven into presidential agendas and political debate ever since.

As a healthcare professional, you may be called upon to provide expertise, guidance and/or opinions on healthcare matters as they are debated for inclusion into new policy. You may also be involved in planning new organizational policy and responses to changes in legislation. For all of these reasons you should be prepared to speak to national healthcare issues making the news.

In this Assignment, you will analyze recent presidential healthcare agendas. You also will prepare a fact sheet to communicate the importance of a healthcare issue and the impact on this issue of recent or proposed policy.

Select an issue related to healthcare that was addressed by each of the last three U.S. presidential administrations.
