Health Assessment

Pregnancy testing remains one of the most controversial issues in the provision of healthcare services to minors and young adults. The provided case study covers a situation where the 17-year old girl, under the parenting of a single father, is confronted with a good deal of uneasiness and pressure from the father to undertake the pregnancy test. As an advanced practice nurse, obtaining informed consent from the allegedly pregnant minor and the parent should be the first-step of intervention in order to determine and guide the consultation, diagnosis and treatment processes (Linton et al., 2018). Moreover, considering that the daughter had not consented to the demand from the single father to undergo a pregnancy test at the facility, the role of the advanced practice nurse is to determine some of the evidence-based guidelines as well as ethics considerations to guide the final response to this scenario.

First, the right of a pregnant minor to consent or refuse consultation, diagnosis or treatment for anything relating to pregnancy (except abortion) must be upheld. The ultimate decision by the single father to make the intricate healthcare decision for the young girl to take the pregnancy test may be justified since she is under 18-years of age (TLH, 2022).
