NURS6006 How Nursing Theories Differ From Others.
What is a nursing theory? How does nursing theory differ from theories of other disciplines?
Florence Nightingale first identified nursing theories as concepts for explaining nursing-related phenomena. According to Gaines (1), a nursing theory is a ‘creative and rigorous structuring of the idea that project a tentative, purposeful, and systematic view of phenomena.” They provide a systematic explanation and description of nursing-related concepts, phenomena, and aspects. The importance of nursing theories in clinical settings is that they guide nursing practice and provide a foundation for evidence-based interventions and informed decisions (2). Further, nursing theories justify the existence of nursing as a distinct profession that is unique from social sciences and other healthcare disciplines (3). Although nursing theories can borrow insights from different disciplines, they differ from theories of other science-related professions in their development processes and levels of abstraction.
How does nursing theory differ from theories of other disciplines?
Nursing theories entail structured, creative, and rigorous consolidation of ideas that provide a purposeful and systematic view of phenomena. It is essential to note that a nursing theory provides a coherent system of grouping general prepositions and premises for developing the nurses’ knowledge relevant to improving patient care. One of the most profound differences between a nursing theory and theories of other disciplines is that the former emanates from the process of inquiry and asking questions or investigating nursing phenomena. Often, nursing researchers apply the PICO(T) framework to develop questions that form the basis of research endeavors and theory development.
Secondly, it is possible to group nursing theories according to their abstraction and specificity levels. According to Younas and Quenelle (4), some nursing theories are abstract and may not be testable through empirical research. As a result, it is essential to apply context-specific nursing theories that guide nursing knowledge and practices. The ability to categorize nursing theories based on their specificity and abstraction levels renders them different from theories of other disciplines.
