Nursing Theories in Research Essay
Nurse researchers might utilize theories as a reference when conducting the study. According to Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern-day nursing, nursing theory is a paradigm that gives a set of concepts and assertions that can be applied consistently and methodically in clinical research. (Riegel et al., 2021). Nursing theories provide the essential information that enables nurses to care for their patients and directs their actions. For this paper, I will explore the care of Jehovah’s Witness (JW) patients who reject blood transfusions. Even though a blood transfusion may be necessary (Rashid et al., 2021), nursing ethics and theories give nurses a strong foundation for allowing patients the chance to exhibit autonomy in their care.
The chosen study is a retrospective review that explored the management of injured Jehovah’s Witness patients, where blood transfusion may not be an option (Olaussen et al., 2018). This study extracted data from the Alfred trauma registry and analyzed the electronic medical records. Twenty-five thousand eight hundred sixty-four trauma patients met the inclusion criteria throughout the seven-year study. The study established that Jehovah’s witness patients accounted for 34% of patients overall (Olaussen et al., 2018). However, the biggest referral centers are likely to run into problematic conditions when blood transfusion may not be possible at least once a year, with a prevalence of about 1 per 300 patients. This study, therefore, draws that health providers have ethical, legal, and medical problems when managing JW patients who are experiencing acute hemorrhage. The health providers must treat JW patients who suffer significant anemia using alternative methods (Crowe & DeSimone, 2019), such as optimizing hemoglobin levels and paying attention to blood-saving techniques during surgery.
Theoretical approaches in nursing are the profession’s foundation and essential to patient care. Research is necessary for theory creation, while theory is necessary for research. Although there are many theoretical and biologically sound solutions, they are not always used. Identifying the most efficient mix of these tactics is required before undertaking more extensive investigations inside and outside hospitals to better direct JW patients’ management. Building the evidentiary base for actions should be the main emphasis of future studies.
