The patient safety improvement act of 2020 is critical for treating infections within healthcare organizations (S.3380 – 116th Congress 2020). It helps to improve the prevalence of acquired infections in the hospital, primarily from the national healthcare safety network, mainly the center for disease prevention and control. The act further strengthens transparency and coordination by encouraging the healthcare facilities to inform a patient of the post-hospital treatment, primarily where self-management strategies are implemented. This act has been impactful in minimizing the number of preventable deaths due to infections after hospital procedures.
The primary aim of the act is to prevent medical errors and protect patients by providing a mechanism for collecting, evaluating, and educating the healthcare providers to avoid possible issues and improve patient outcomes (Vaidotas et al., 2019). It addresses the anti-microbial management and assesses the current increase of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Hospitals are required to report issues due to antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance for the reporting schemes. Antibiotics also have extensive drawbacks since pharmacists cannot supply them without the correct prescription.
Electronic health records are technologies that hospitals can employ to prevent medication errors by flagging potential drug interactions and adverse reactions. Medication interactions cause the majority of drug prescription errors. EHR systems keep a record of patients’ medication (Vaidotas et al., 2019). It also automatically checks for problems whenever a new medication is prescribed and alerts the clinicians of potential conflicts. The main ethical issues that EHRs have are privacy and confidentiality, data inaccuracies, security breaches, and system implementations. Today, there are more concerns about hacking and how it impacts the security of patient information when it happens in healthcare facilities.
