Rawls posited that humans can only be fair and impartial when placed under a veil of ignorance thereby acting as true equals unbiased by the societal status. As a result, human beings would depend on their powers of reason to decide the principles of social justice. Jonh Rawls’ exploration of justice as fairness is sound as it led to the development of a detailed theory that highlights various issues in society such as animal rights, euthanasia, abortion and politics (Fanton, 2020). It seeks to promote human rights and liberties and equitable distribution. Therefore, justice as fairness indicates a significant effort to create an alternative moral paradigm founded on the contractual tradition. Rawls used two principles to illustrate justice as fairness. First, each individual has an equal right to varied equality basic liberties aligned with a collection of liberties for others (Edor, 2020). Second, social and economic inequalities are to be categorized to ensure they are reasonable and linked to positions available for all.

Rawls uses the concept of the original position to establish the ideal principles of justice. The original position is a hypothetical case in which a group of equals comes to a rational understanding of justice. Rawls’ work on original position generalizes the work of Locke, Rousseau and Kant concerning natural rights theories of social contract. The ideas of social contract by these theorists described a more limited role. However, Rawls tried to develop a concept of original position whereby there is a principle that evaluates the justice of political constitutions and of economic and social systems and the laws that reinforce these arrangements (Edor, 2020). Therefore, the original position tries to create a situation in which human can reflect on conditions and decide what is reasonable in their conduct toward others in society.
