This is the third of four practicum courses in the advanced practice psychiatric-mental health curriculum. Students will apply their knowledge of psychopathology, psychopharmacology, and psychiatric assessment to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental health disorders in children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. The focus of this course is on advanced nursing practice in mental health settings. Note: Students with catalog years before Spring 2018 must complete a minimum of 144 practicum hours; those with catalog years beginning Spring 2018 must complete a minimum of 160 practicum hours.

For this course, 40 patient encounters must be with a combination of children (ages 5-12) and adolescents (ages 13-17) (with some patients in each age group) AND 40 patient encounters must be with a combination of adults (ages 18-64) and older adults (ages 65 and older) (patient encounters in all four age categories are required). One example is students may have 15 children and 25 adolescents (in combination) to equal the 40 required for those ages group and 30 adults and 10 older adults (in combination) to equal the 40 required for those age groups).

80 hours must be working with a combination of children and adolescents AND 80 hours combination working with adults and older adults.

*Students must be able to see patients across the lifespan to include children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. If the primary preceptor only sees adult clients, a secondary preceptor will be needed in order to complete the requirements for children and adolescent experiences. Sometimes this can be another provider in the same office as the primary preceptor. Or multiple sites may be required to see the types of patients and services required for this course. Students would need each preceptor and/or field site approved applications.

PRAC 6665: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Care Across the Lifespan I Course Specific Requirements

Types of Patients: Patients receiving care for psychiatric and substance use disorders across the life span to include children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

Types of Services: Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with acute and chronic psychiatric and substance use disorders.

Possible Preceptor Choices: PMHNP or Board Certified Psychiatrist.

Possible Site Choices: Private practice, community psychiatric and/or counseling center, crisis centers, drug/alcohol rehabilitation centers, college counseling center, employee assistance program (EAP) sites, assisted living/Alzheimer’s facility, hospital or specialty care facility, jails/prison, or any other site where psychiatric assessment, diagnosing, and treatment takes place (to be determined on an individual basis).

Nonacceptable Sites: Any form of community and/or home visits.

Nonacceptable Preceptors: FNP, AGACNP, AGPCNP, PMHCNS, or any other NP other than a board-certified psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner. No PAs. No psychotherapists, psychologists, or MSWs.

Any schedule for more than 8 hours per day must be verified through preceptor email to faculty as preceptor working a condensed schedule AND approved by faculty.

For this course, all practicum activity hours are logged within the Meditrek system. Hours completed must be logged in Meditrek within 48 hours of completion in order to earn the points associated with this assignment. You may only log hours with Preceptors that are approved in Meditrek.

Students 2018 must complete a minimum of 160 hours of supervised clinical experience. You may not complete your hours sooner than 8 weeks. You will enter your approved preceptor and clinical faculty as part of each time and patient encounter you log.
