Theories to Guide Clinical Practice

Goals are necessary for the practice of nursing. They guide best practices and policies that ensure that patients get the best possible care. The theory of goal attainment (TGA) is a relationship-based nursing theory. This theory was developed by Imogene King. It facilitates patient and family-centered care (Park, 2021). It is based on mutual perceptions of both patients and nurses. Because of this, patients and nurses can collaborate to develop necessary initiatives to help achieve the set goals. For this reason, I choose this theory to guide my clinical practice. Clinical practice is based on collaboration.  This theory enables collaboration to help in solving patients’ problems. It enables clinicians to make informed decisions and enhance the quality of care. Collaboration with other clinicians will allow me to achieve my individual goals. Factors that may affect goal attainment include time and roles. Therefore, any plans set to achieve these goals should take these factors into account.

The most suitable theory for counseling is the behavioral theory. This theory is based on the idea that all behaviors are learned. The behavioral theory states that the environment shapes actions. This means that behavior can be increased or decreased (Chauhan et al., 2017). This concept can be applied in the care of psychiatric patients. Certain mental disorders can be managed by modification of behavior. Mental health professionals can use this theory to eliminate unwanted behaviors. This can be done using a process called conditioning. This approach forms the basis of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in treating mental health disorders (Wenzel, 2017).

Refer to the instructions in Week 2 to create individualized practicum learning objectives that meet the requirements for this course. These objectives should be aligned specifically to your Practicum experience. Your objectives should address your self-assessment of the skills found in the “PMHNP Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form” you completed in Week 1.

As you develop your individualized practicum learning objective, be sure to write them using the SMART format. Use the resources found in Week 2 to guide your development. Once you review your resources, continue and complete the following. Note: Please make sure each of your objectives are connected to your self-assessment. Also, consider that you will need to demonstrate how you are advancing your knowledge in the clinical specialty.
