Prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) and its Associated Factors Among Adults in Abeshge District, Ethiopia Essay

The above study is a type of descriptive quantitative research method. Specifically, it is a cross-sectional study design, a kind of observational study design (Woldeamanuel et al., 2019). This study design is a snapshot of the health status of a population at a given point in time; for instance, this study is a prevalence study of COPD patients that was conducted in the Abeshge district of Southern Ethiopia between February 5 and May 20, 2019 (Woldeamanuel et al., 2019). Since the study compares the prevalence of COPD in persons with exposure of interest and those without disclosure, it is undoubtedly a cross-sectional study. The problem in this study was to define the risk factors associated with the development of COPD among adults and the prevalence, intending to determine the burden of the disease and inform the creation of future preventative and management methods.

The population of this study was adult residents of the randomly chosen villages in the Abeshge district of Southern Ethiopia (Woldeamanuel et al., 2019). This study hypothesizes that subjects who smoke a cigarette and those exposed to biomass smoke will develop COPD compared to those exposed to cigarette and biomass smoke. I might explore the same topic qualitatively by employing a case study where the participants describe their in-depth respiratory problems after long-term cigarette and biomass smoke exposure through direct observation and interaction with the subject (Sibbald et al., 2021). I prefer quantitative research design to qualitative design since it is more scientific, accurate, less biased, quick, and focused (Noyes et al., 2019). Moreover, it can be projected to a larger population, therefore clearly defining the subject under study.

In your own words, answer the following:
1) What type of research study is this? (Qualitative vs. Quantitative). If you can identify what type of qualitative (ie. phenomenology, grounded theory, etc.) or quantitative study (ie. RCT, cohort, longitudinal, etc), please include that as well.
2) Besides a similar statement that this is a \”randomized controlled trial\” or an exact description of the type of study, how do you know this is \”that\” type of study?
3) What is the \”problem\” or the \”what\” identified in the study? (Ex: catheter-associated urinary tract infections [CAUTI]) What is the PURPOSE or \”why\” of the study? (Ex: The purpose of this study is to reduce the rates of CAUTIs)
4) What is the population or sample under study? (Who or maybe what, is being studied)
5) If this is a quantitative study, what is the hypothesis? (It may be explicitly stated or implied). If this is a qualitative study, what is (are) the research question(s)?
6) Provide one example of how you might explore this same topic and similar problem using the opposite type of research. (If your study is quantitative, describe a qualitative example).
7) Do you prefer qualitative research or quantitative research? Explain.
